  • Skytrak between feet and ball?

I think I read a post by someone who said he played on his Skytrak with a lefty, and they didn't move the unit while alternating shots. The lefty just took his stance while standing over the Skytrak unit.

Is this a thing? Does anyone else do this? Does anyone do this for their 'normal' setup?

It seems like it would work dimensionally if the skytrak only sits about 12" from the ball?

And if you have a separate stance mat and hitting mat, then you could leave a gap between the two mats so that the Skytrak could sit in between. (So it wouldn't be affected by your feet movement or by your club's impact.)

In case anyone is wondering, I'm interested in this setup for 3 reasons:

    1. I haven't bought anything yet; I'm still in the planning stages of figuring out what my sim space will look like. And I'm really struggling to get the best layout with the limited space I have. In one of my layout options, the Skytrak in its "normal" position would be sitting in a spot where people sometimes need to walk by. I'd like to leave a nice path between my mat and the wall, rather than setting up the skytrak to be a tripping hazard.

    2. I'm trying to work on my swing direction, and I can imagine that having a $2000 box sitting to the right of the ball is going to sub-consciously 'encourage' an out-to-in path. (Can anyone comment on whether this has ever been a problem for them?)

    3. I've never shanked/toed a ball towards myself, but I have hit shots that would have been bad enough to hit a Skytrak if there had been one sitting in front of me in its 'normal' position. (I do plan on getting a protective case, but then I'm worried about setting up a scenario where the ball could ricochet off that protective case and come back at me...)

    Any input is appreciated!

SkyTrak_Seth ... Placing the SkyTrak between the feet and ball is an interesting concept that could be used to engineer the SkyTrak into both a left and right handed playing system. If the unit was able to project lasers and capture ball flight from both sides of the unit it would eliminate the shanking damage dilemma and create a universal left or right handed player setup. Out to in swing topped balls would probably be the risk factor but those balls aren't nearly as forcefull as the open face shank because the mat deadens the force of the shot.

Interesting idea that I never would have thought of. I'm assuming the shaft will be in the way often, but maybe not, since it the skytrak would be quite a bit forward in the stance of a lefty standing over it.

I have never felt like the skytrak is making me swing outside in, but I think it is in the mind of friends when they hit on it. As far as shaping goes, I have finally begun to work on and develop a draw this winter.

I have never come anywhere close to toeing or shanking one into my skytrak.. I did however accidentally nick a ball on a practice swing and missed it by a bit.. yes a little shot of pee came out.

You will get a lot of misreads. Shaft will be between skytrak and the ball and it will cause occlusion.

I would think as long as your shot has the ball moving faster than club (smash over 1.0) you'd be ok. Maybe 1.25 or higher or something.

Certainly for shots like drivers and woods and long irons, the ball is far enough away from the club within the capture zone.

Flops shots may not work tho.

I have had a left handed friend over and it worked just fine for him standing this way.

Works fine for me..I set it to lefty and let him hit regular while I hit with it between my feet. Nothing extraordinary happens to reads.

Worked fine for me too. Tested with a gc2 at the same time comparing them and no had issues.

Yeah, it definitely works but I can't say that I recommend it. One short friend with a flat path and a bad swing and it's a shaft through the SkyTrak.
