Skytrak Spin issues vs matt issues - using neo tomahawk tee remedy

Hi Guys,

I have been having major issues with curvature and low back spin and relatively high side spin.

I have been hitting balls for approx 4-5 hrs a day for the past 6 weeks... lol (dont judge) and im confidently hitting my lower clubs60 to 7iron the best I have in my life.

I will use my 8 Iron as the prime example as this is my favorite club and I can replicate the numbers almost 85% of the time.

My 8 Iron averages about 113- 115 ball speed - with duffs and fats at 100 to 110 - personal high at 123 (this is a huge ball for me.. anyhow) Lunch andgle I can never get bellow 22 only when I blade it (striped shots are around 25-26 usually)

I know what a striped shot feels like and the highest spin I have ever gotten off of this club has been 6900 but averages usually from 5700 to 6300 and my side-spin averages around -1000 which creates pretty significant draws. This does not change with a tee in the ground - exact same results

So I ordered the tomahawk tee with tee-claw that alot of guys are setup with (I have spent over 200$ on tees and this is by far the best setup)

The tomawk tee is literally paper thin super smooth and not sticky. I setup to his the first 8 Iron with Zero warm up - with the tee upside down for an iron on my CCE style matt

Boom 116 ball speed 20 degree launch 7856 spin -560 ss (WTF!!!!!!) tight little draw! I couldnt believe it!

I believe whole heartedly now that this matt is killing me - the amount of over draws I hit in tgc are not normal and nothing like that in real life.

I do get very steep with my irons (something im working on) which I believe causes the fibers of the cce to grab the ball more than it should which kills the spin/bs and when you have less backspin with equal sidespin you get a big hook - what the tomahawk tee allows you to do is hit it into the ground as it cradles the ball - its super smooth which doesn't grab the golf club and allows the ball to spin properly and doesnt affect ball speed with irons as much..

Maybe you should look at some sort of divot-action mat. I'm a sweeper, not a pincher, but they are supposed to be great.

Thanks.. yeah im definetely going to be changing mats soon.. I just tried hitting off of my putting surface and im getting way better results than off my matt - going to see if I can demo mats anywhere

Just to be clear - the divot-action is just a section that you put into a cutout in your stance mat. Takes the pounding and flexes.

I had the same issues until I changed my mat to one which is made from several layers.

It is not killing my wrists and I do have perfect backspin numbers.

The side spin (which is not really existing) is a problem of not clean hits a lot of times. You only need to hit the ball 1cm to early and the clubface closes as fast as you can say "hook". That much closing of the clubface is typical for mat training and will not happen that much on real turf.

I had a similiar problem and was going crazy until I realized (still can't believe but it's true) that after many days of practice a patina of plastic (from the ball consumption) had deposited on the club face. Before I realized that the back spin with the 7 iron was 2000 rpm and 3000 with 9 iron. I cleaned the club face and the groves accurately and immediatly I returned to normal values (7000 with 7 iron and 9000 with 9 iron). Mat doesn't matter

I read your post and did the same to no avail... im not saying this is your situation.

I believe this is specific to guys with cce that are on the steeper side - hence the mat test with trackman.

This was just a remedy that allows me to use my cce for the time being and still hold greens.

I dont have issues when I hit off of my rymar proput surface..

I also have noticed more of a hook (7-10 yd) when hitting off my mat (no tee) when it feels like I hit my normal 3-4 yd draw.

I have to surmise that the mat generates much more friction than grass/turf, so I have attributed some of the 'over draw' effect to that.

Perhaps the Tomahawk tees encourage more of a 'pick' swing and therefore less 'pinch' on the turf which has to be less friction.

Anyways, I ordered some of the tees and will report back.

Edited to add, I also have noticed the ball cover transfer to my club faces, cleaning the club faces makes a huge difference.

seems to me at the MOI the ball is not affected by the mat/grass. The ball immediatly goes up. Am I missing something?

Dont know if if you have this type of matt.. but after hitting on it for a while it gets very nappy.

So instead of sitting on top of the turf it sits a bit more in the turf

Steep AOA + CCE style mat = poor results. Once the grass on the CCE mats starts to grab the clubface, it really slows down the club, hence the difference in numbers you are getting. I have tested side by side with Skytrak and Trackman on a CCE and Cheap commercial range mat. Much better results off the cheap commercial mat. Any attack angle over -5deg really gets punished. Most people that really with down with there irons are in the -6-8deg AOA range.

That being said, if you shallow out your swing, they work fine, and really can lead to better ball striking overall.

Thats the thing.. im really happy with how im hitting the ball.

Launching it high IRL and spinning it properly.

If I had some low launch angles as a result it would be a different story.. Im 6' 5" so shallows pretty tricky for me

They dont cause me to sweep it..

Im steep period - been working on it for years will never change lol...

what they do is cradle the ball and act as a piece of material between the ball and matt fibers during impact - they are paper like and very thin - which doesnt allow the matt fibers to increase the friction.

Yuuup, I'm steep on my short irons for sure, and... I would have a better chance of switching to lefty than changing that:-)
