  • Fun to see trends I couldn't directly measure otherwise.

I tend to hit one ball repeatedly when I use my skytrak. As such, it begins to get smooth and probably begins to get some micro-stress fractures. Everything is gradual, and the current Srixon tri-speed tour's that I found really cheap last about 4,000 shots or so before cracking (haven't counted precisely). Last night, I cracked an old one.

Immediately after putting the new one in use, I gained 12 yards back to all drives and 8 yards to the 8 iron. And things flew straighter.

I know this isn't surprising or news, but it's so cool to be able to directly see the data.

By the way, this is for range use. If I were playing simulator seriously, I wouldn't use a worn ball. But I haven't bought TGC right now, as I'm waiting for the 2017 Protee plans for TGC to be revealed.

      Are we expecting anything different?
I was about to pull the trigger on JPNG for this year to see what TGC2 will bring. No rush on my side either.

Been doing some ball testing recently and it does matter what you hit. I bought the Ammo Box (re-conditioned Pro V1 from Rock Bottom) and consistently hit it 5-10 yards shorter than the Callaways I've been using since December. Turns out that the Pro V1s are about a decade old. So either it had lost some compression or my swing isn't ideal for use with it. Either way, it's great to be able to see the data as you've pointed out. As if I need more technical data to nerd out on.

Having my Skytrak has really opened my eyes to ball quality. I was always buying 2 dozen refurbed pro v for $30, but never again. They would split all the time and even get visually oblong. Very inconsistent.

There have been numerous times in testing that I've freaked out about something being wrong in the app, only to realize I'd inadvertently picked up the wrong ball

Another thing to be very aware of (since you mention cracking) is that a ball that has been hit to death can develop a crack that only opens during impact and is not visible to the naked eye. Makes for very strange readings!

I play outside in a "shed" I built over last summer and just use space heaters to warm the place up and noticed I even get worse numbers using the cold balls that are sitting there so now I always bring a nice set of warm ones out with me for sim play and use the cold ones just to warm up on the range prior to playing. And I tried using some Pro v 1 that I had found over last summer and apparently balls do make a huge difference lol. Wish I could convince my friends who shoot 100+ every round that those balls are no good for their game. I'm playing a nice cheap Srixon soft feel and it suits my game well. Saving money and getting better results is always a good thing!

I've split 3 Pro-V's (brand new) in the last two weeks. I guess I've never used one Pro-V for more than 4 or 5 rounds before losing it, but I am surprised that they blew up so quickly.

i've split a bunch of prov1x's in the last couple of weeks but they were 2nd quality from lostgolfballs.com by the way, don't buy 2nd quality from lostgolfballs for sim use. i got a bucket of 96 and around a third of them had rough spots from hitting cart paths or something.

I still had some old Callaway Tour iX balls until last year. I think they were about 7 years old and had never been hit. They were about 10 yards shorter than new balls. I had noticed that these balls were gradually getting shorter when I played them IRL over the past two years. I think that balls will deteriorate after 4+ years even without being hit.

The Skytrak has really opened my eyes on balls. I have split a few, but they still last longer than hitting them crooked in real life. I won't skimp on my sim balls. With that said, I use the Snell ball and it's the only thing to break me of the Prov addiction.

KSigs all the way. Bought 5 cases when they first came out.
