  • Skytrak and kids

I recently purchased a Skytrak and the brief time I've used it I really enjoyed it. Numbers and flight all seemed accurate to me and there was no issue with capturing any of my shots. However it wouldn't pick up any of my sons shots. He is only 6 and hits it about 50-60 yards in the air. Has anyone had any experiences with kids using the skytrak? It had no problem picking up my shots at this distance and even much shorter, but picked up absolutely none of my sons.

    Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I've had my kids hit on my SkyTrak, as well, and have had the same problem. It picks up their good shots, but if they go way left, way right, or top it bad, the SkyTrak won't pick it up. I'm thinking the new R-Motion might be the way to go for kids based on the way that device works. It's reportedly not as accurate as the SkyTrak, but there's also nothing the kids can destroy with an errant shot, either (Although I do have the FMJ case for the SkyTrak!) Good luck, and have fun golfing with your son!

My daughter is 12 and just starting to learn how to golf. She hits the ball about 50-60 yds and I have had her on the Skytrak with no issues. It doesn't seem to pick up the errant shots that go way right or left, but it doesn't pick them up for me when I hit them that terribly, either.

Even with my SkyTrak in a FMJ, I still shudder thinking about letting my twin grandsons (who are 4) play with my SkyTrak. The biggest problem for me is one of them is left handed. My solution was to purchase an Opti Shot for them to play on. I just put the SkyTrak away, and it takes me about 10 minutes to set up the Opti Shot for them. They love it!

I use the Skytrak with both of my daughters age 8 and 11 without issues. My 11 year old hits it farther than me but my youngest daughter's shots still register about 95% of the time. Even short lob wedges which for her carry 30 yards are picked up consistently.
I did notice however that when she wears her sparkly Vans shoes it wreaks havoc on the skytrak for some reason. I guess the glitter from her shoes confuses the camera. If she changes her shoes, no problem. We also play full rounds of pretty regularly on JNPG as well which has been a blast. Especially since you can play from different tees for each player.
Just as a side note, I also work with a long drive competitor and Ive been very impressed with the ability for my Skytrak to pick up the range of shots from long drive to junior.

Yeah, most definitely a conflict with sparkle glitter shoes

Thanks for the confirmation Seth. Both girls have some crazy taste in shoes. The glitter shoes def cause a problem. So do the checkerboard Vans. I think that since they have a much more narrow stance, their feet are probably more inline with the ball flight from the camera's perspective.

Hmm, this shoe theory might have something to do with it. He was wearing very bright orange and white shoes. Going to try with something different on. Thanks.

I have had a variety of different aged kids come in. Seems most kids hit very flat shots with very little loft and the SkyTrak really had a hard time picking up those shots. My .02 would be to make sure the ball is far enough back from the dot to give it a little extra time to get into the camera view. My daughter has been using it since she was four and when she makes good contact (ball up in the air) it showed up with no problem. But her more bladed shots had issues not registering.

My son is 8 and hits balls on ST and we have had no problems. There is a four year old from the the street comes down to hit balls I get miss reads on his tops and shanks. Someone mentioned the FMJ case and the four year old shanked one right into the face of the FMJ and no damage was done to the system. I think if it is topped way left or right the system can't read it. With my son hitting on it it reads every time.

My son is 5 and loves playing on it. Gets a blast when we hit balls in the ocean. Also likes Hammond Farms driving range and likes it when we nail a car or bear. I just hit the R button for automatic replay.

Could be the shoes or trousers that he's wearing. I know when I chip with me feet very close together I sometimes struggle to get a read depending on what I'm wearing. But when I separate my feet a little all shots read straight away.
