  • Left/Right play workaround with SkyTrak and TGC

    Hello all -

I know left/right play is a bad idea for SkyTrak - but I'm trying to figure out a workaround. For those that use SkyTrak and TGC - can you see this turntable -

being workable for a simulator round with a right handed player and a lefty participating? Or between changing settings on TGC for left/right and fiddling with the turntable and SkyTrak will it likely be a complete PITA?

Or a more likely solution for my setup - is it possible to have a lefty play an entire hole in TGC - and enter his score and then move SkyTrak and have the right handed player play the same hole, enter his score and continue with this process for an entire round? If you had markings for the proper left/right alignment locations for SkyTrak to make placement easier it seems like this might work if TGC can keep score this way?

    Thanks!

You can only play in order in TGC. The turntable will work if you have the room but you'll likely need 16-17 feet of width.

Thanks - kinda figured that was the case and my 15ft width looked pretty sketchy when I was swinging a driver....

Have you tried having one guy hit over the top of the Skytrak? I’ve done this some when playing with my kids. My youngest is a lefty. We set Skytrak up in lefty mode and my daughter and I swing over the top. Works quite well if you can get comfortable doing this.

Do not go over the top unless its once in a great while it will eventually ruin your IRL swing as your mind is more so on the skytrak below you then on a proper swing

            Thanks -

I had read about swinging over the SkyTrak previously. I'm sure I could do it (but do think it would be distracting..) but was hoping to find a more elegant solution. I was even playing with the idea of a half circle shaped track (with open end toward screen for putting) that would allow you to move SkyTrak from one side of the hitting area to the other letting lefty and righty hit from pretty much the exact same spot. Maybe you could cut out the curved channel in a raised platform and then put SkyTrak on the edge of a turntable under the platform that would move it through the channel to fixed positions on both sides.

Possibly place a larger plywood circle on top of below and put SkyTrak on the edge of the circle to swing it around the hitting area? The stops are built in for proper positioning so might work... Do you see any obvious problems with this idea?

Maybe beyond my engineering/fabricating capabilities and/or work ethic but may give it a shot :-) ... If only my space were two feet wider I could use a standard lazy Susan type contraption.

Tried hitting over the top of Skytrak today in left handed mode. It was actually much easier than I thought. I feel comfortable with irons but probably will not use woods and Driver because it’s a flatter swing. I’ll play with left handers on short par 3 courses.

I'd probably try and make an indexable (if you have the metal case you could use dowels through the leveling feet holes) base for each hand similar to the metal case with the three large bolts to adjust height and level. Get those set up for each position and then just move the unit back and forth. That would allow you to center the person in the width of the space. Luckily I don't golf with any lefties yet, because my space is not very wide.

This is how I have my SkyTrak setup. I can pick it up and move it and goes right back in alignment. Something like this setup on both sides of the mat should work, just have to dial it in. The weight holds the base in place but could be more permanently mounted if needed and a paint job might not hurt. You can see a small piece of tape by the screen which is my alignment point regardless of what game I'm in because the "offset" feature seems different in each one.

Just catching up and seeing the most recent replies to this thread. Thanks very much! The idea of indexed holes is intriguing. Since left and right would be hitting from the same central spot with turf on both sides - physical alignment strips - wood, etc.on both sides would get in the way of stance. I do have the metal enclosure - so I could extend bolts downward through the three holes (with nuts to lock them in at correct length) and drill holes in the turf and plywood sub-frame to accept them. Drilling the holes properly so they properly align things on both sides will be tricky but likely worth exploring. If I end up making it work I'll get back with a review.
