  • Hitting alternate shots - practice session

This is probably a dumb question, but I can't see any simple user-friendly way to run a Skytrak session with alternating (say period 2) club selection (e.g. 9I then 5H then 9I then 5H then 9I then 5H..........).

The reason why I ask is that when I'm practicing with my Skytrak I don't think that it's particularly useful just to crash off 50 shots say with a single club. It's a much better test to hit a range of clubs (some long, some short) as above. Another good way to practice is say alternate 3 woods off a tee and 75 yard pitches with a gap wedge

I know that you COULD do this in practice range mode just by altering the club selection in the middle of the screen with every shot, but that's a pain. Does anybody know how this might be done say in game improvement mode?

I think you could set this up as a skills assessment...although I've never done it with multiple targets using the same club. YMMV

just don't tell it what club you're hitting on the range and whack away with whatever you want to hit.

I do find that i hit better at a goofy shaped green at 76 yards than i do just hitting as close to 75 yds as possible. The target focuses me at a subconscious level, that or im less critical about being 5 yards offline because im still pin high.

I would however suggest something very similar just setting the green at a short distance, then drive over it to a tee distance and follow up with a shot at the green. Alternate all of your wedges ao you work on short and long shots for each.

Although, i would still like a random practice mode like has been suggested to Seth before.

Thanks to all for suggestions. I'll try to do as Seth says and set it up as a skills assessment. I agree with mdniBruce that a random practice mode would be great - after all this is what you get on the course. You could set it up to ask you to hit greens at range A yds to B yds randomly asking you to select your club.

As jut111 says you could just not identify the club and whack away (and I've done this with alternating clubs) but this has two drawbacks
          (1) The PDF of the shot data will not then identify clubs used and when I transfer this to a .xls file I'll have to save alternate lines for single club data (not impossible, but fiddly)
          (2) the coefficients of the fit for the club speed, smash etc. are different for different clubs so it won't know them (yes - I know that club speed etc. is not measured anyway..........)

yeah I should have added, I'm not one to go back and review data - though in your case telling the difference between a 5hi and a 9 iron should be pretty simple. I also completely ignore club head speed and smash, as frankly I don't care. Ball speed tells me what I need to know in that regard.
