  • hit or miss on the skytrak driving range

I don't understand why skytrak sometimes says hit when it's clearly a miss. Maybe not by much but if it's a miss, it's a miss. right?

I was going to post this exact same question. I only noticed it when I updated to the lastest IOS app version, When firing at a green the ball clearly misses the green, but then shows as a hit and stats are off.

@Seth - is this something you are aware of?

    thanks

I noticed this too recently and it puzzled me. The location of the green is clearly marked, and sometimes (OK, often) I miss it, but if I don't miss by much then it sometimes counts it as a hit. I am vain so actually I quite like this - but it is odd.............

Is it unusual for yellow 3 stripe range balls to get less than 1/2 the spin rate of a pro v. Does this lack of spin rate affect the distance calculations?

As per other threads, ball type can make a really big difference to spin. Next time you're hitting on the range, try hitting 10 shots with (say) a supersoft and then 10 with a chromesoft and look at the spins. You may be surprised. Spin materially affects distance of course - it's in the equations that are used to calculate the ball flight.

I dont think this is anything to do with ball type etc. Skytrak is reading a shot, calculating flight, distance etc, showing the ball land off the green graphically but then interpret that the shot hit the green. This happens with both Pro V1, or cheap pinnacles or similar.

Sorry. I wasn't clear. The comments about balls is a whole separate topic. I probably should have brought that up in a separate post instead of as a reply. The reason that I brought up the issue regarding spin rates ohs because earlier in the day I was hitting prov1s indoors and my approach wedge spin rates were at like 10,500. Then later in the day, I went to the range and hit the yellow 3 stripe balls that so many ranges use. And my spin rates with my approach wedge were in the 4,000 range. But I was hitting them longer by a good 10 to 12 yards. At least that's what the data showed in ST. I thought maybe it was possible that the super low spin rate could have resulted in greater carry distances. More likely, it was just the ST bugging out because it was like 26 degrees out.

This is all perfectly normal and has nothing to do with cold weather. The spin rates between the balls that you mention are acceptable and the low spin rate on the range balls will carry further. Kind of shocking but more importantly shows you the performance of a good ball. Basically you are hitting fliers with those range balls.
