  • SkyTrak and/or TGC issues = weird!

I was playing with a couple of friends last night using my SkyTrack with The Golf Club software when we experienced a few issues. I'm not sure if it was the SkyTrak unit or the TGC software.

Was playing a course and we reached the 14th hole when the SkyTrak unit simply stopped working. Green light on the bottom was on but the other two lights turned red and the laser disappeared. This is the third time that this happened. SkyTrak unit is connected via USB. The software on the laptop is working, but no response from the SkyTrak unit. The SkyTrak unit is fully charged and the communication cable (USB) hasn't been disconnected or touched. The only way I have found to resolve this is to close out of all the software, relaunch everything and start over. This includes entering the player names (because you can't save profiles) and re-starting the golf round from hole #1 (because you can't save the game, and when you do it doesn't save all 3 players). Anyone have a recommendation to try to resolve this? Would be really nice to actually finish a round of golf.

Second issue that happened last night was the weirdest thing that I have experienced so far. First - I was first player of 3 players that was teeing off a 450 yard par 4. I hit my driver and was a decent shot (normal shot trajectory, power, etc.). The shot recorded a grand total of 8 inches. Yes - 8 inches! Player #2 played his tee shot and it recorded it but it seamed that it wasn't close to being accurate. The shot went 200 yards out, but 200 yards to the left. Not what we expected to see from the shot. Player #3 played his tee shot and it seamed to record better, but the distance was around 200 yards for a driver. Not normal distance but it was at least in the faraway and longer than my 8 inch tee shot. I played my second shot (seamed normal), player #2 played his second shot (normal) and player #3 played his 2nd shot and that shot recored WAY long. Hit hit a 8 iron 197 yards. Way longer than his normal 145 yard shot. Fast forward to all three players being on the green. I went to putt my ball (ball was on the green and the software showed "PUTT" on the shot type). I can't remember the distance but I would guess it was 20-30 feet. I swung my putter and after a 1-2 second delay the ball flew up in the air and recorded a 22 yard shot that put my ball several yards OVER the green. It acted like the ball was in chip mode and not in putt mode. We played a couple more holes with similar issues on the next two holes. Errant tee shots, tee shots recording 8-10 inches with a driver. Putts flying off he green like chips, etc. We couldn't take it anymore and quit the game. We played for about an hour using the challenge mode and hit tons of shots with zero issues.

Any thoughts on either of these issues? The unit has been working good for the entire time that I have owned it until recently. Nothing has changed with my setup. Same computer, connection type, etc. I have tried everything that I know to try. Looked at the troubleshooting guide and nothing addresses issue #2. Issue #1 sounds like a connection issue but that shouldn't be an issue with the USB connection that I am using.

    Help?

We've had similar issues with our Skytrak / TGC setup,

When you get 1 green and 2 red lights, we find you can power off the Skytrak, and alt-tab to the interface window, power on the skytrak again, and hit the "Connect the box" button, then alt-tab back to TGC, this generally works for us, and means you don't have to restart your round (really annoying when you are up but a couple of holes and at the 15th)

This method also works when you start to get random reads, i've had a couple of push cut drivers that have gone 420yds, and then we've had random shots that will start 11* right or left when they were straight down the line (both drivers, and irons).

Some people on here recommend Wifi connection over USB, I did purchase a USB wifi dongle for the PC, but i'm not sure where it is at the moment so will try that when i find it.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one !! I had two well hit drives go about 4 or 5 yards and had two putts travel 100+yards. I'm not that good but I don't think I'm that bad!!

well i've just finished playing 4 par 3 9hole courses and a full round at firestone, all in direct network mode.

what a difference it made, i think for the 2 of us playing effectively 3 x full rounds we had 3 non reads, we still had a number of misreads ( 7 degrees right, 60degree lob wedge carrying 120meters etc) but the difference of non reads was increadible.

Thanks for everyone's input. I tried to run the SkyTrak unit in network mode but I couldn't get it to work so I resorted to USB mode. Funny thing is that I tried it today (different course) and it worked fine until the end. I played 18 holes with 2 players, no problems. Then I played a different course and it made it to hole 17 and then the entire system locked up. No red laser, no computer activity. I had another laptop in the same room and ran a internet speed test and it was normal, so the problem was either the software on the laptop or the SkyTrak unit itself. Bummer because I was feeling optimistic that the problem was just an isolated incident. Now I'm not sure what to change.

Are you using a metal case that protects the SkyTrak window? If not well aligned, the mis-reads are horrendous because the lasers emission or the reflected lasers are deflected by the metal. I don't remember the name of my metal case (first run after the prototype), but it has metal posts running between the emitter/receivers...I align it with tees at the two ends and the tees also keep it aligned.

If the bottom light is green and the other two are red, it means that the SkyTrak is connected via Direct Connection but the connection hasn't been made to the SkyTrak app. If you restart that app, you don't need to restart TGC. Just wait for it to connect again and then Alt+Tab back to TGC. If this happens on a regular basis then I would try replacing the USB Cable first, then try reinstalling the SkyTrak Driver. My guess is that there isn't actually a problem with the SkyTrak but that it is somewhere else.
