  • Skytrak metal case evaluations?

Well, after 16k+ shots on my Skytrak I finally toed or shanked a low punch shot into the unit. It was inside the plastic case. The unit was knocked over but surprisingly the only sign of damage is that the plastic clasp on the case broke. The Skytrak seems to working fine at the moment.

Anyway it got me thinking I should find better protection than the plastic case and was interested in hearing opinions from those who have used the metal case, particularly in regards to misreads experienced when using the case vs. not using.

The plastic case protects one time. RIP! The metal case works fine...mine has been hit twice...no damage to the SkyTrak.

Yes, the metal case is absolutely the best investment you can make for the Skytrak.

I had to fiddle about a bit to get the best positioning for the ST unit after purchasing the FMJ, but now I get no more misreads than I had before. IMHO it's more than worth it. You're protecting a pretty substantial investment.

No misreads here and I’ve used a diy protector, fmj and armor.

When playing TGC and using the SkyTrak in the FMJ case, I get misreads with my wedges. When using the SkyTrak without the metal case, I do not get misreads with my wedges. I got so frustrated that I play tournaments without the case.

The "original" FMJ case has some issues. The SkyTrak-modified FMJ case has different and bigger openings and supposedly has less issues.

I have an early FMJ case [vertical thin bars between components]. Quickly realized the need to align perfectly. Two tees, one front and one back, fit perfectly and keep the SkyTrak aligned. No extra miss-reads and no problem with wedges unless the ball strikes above the screen. My screen is eight feet from the red laser dot and ten feet tall...so better than a 45 angle. Actually, most of my flop shots also get read...those that end up on top of my enclosure (LOL).

In addition, I never mounted the Trak to the case, but I position the face right up to the case. It has taken two hits to the case, just topples over and all is well.

Thanks for the insights, I guess it's time to get the metal case so fear of a mishit doesn't influence my swing.

I just got my ST and FMJ in December so I assume it is a newer addition. I haven't had any issues with it and it provides a handle to carry the ST to and from my garage.

The version with the handle is the newer SkyTrak version of FMJ.

Has anyone with the Skytrak metal case actually put a shot into the unit? What were the results?

I hit the FMJ(Skytrak version) while taking a practice swing with my driver. The side of the driver clipped the ball and the ball went directly into the skytrak. No damage at all. BUY THE CASE. Even if you are a good player, accidents happen.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, when the ball hit the FMJ, it actually was going fast enough to turn the whole unit 90*. Figure you arent going to hit it much harder than that.

Yes, I have had a shank or two go off of the FMJ. Nothing happened, I don't even think the ST got off it's alignment. Also, as embarrassing as this may be, I actually hit the FMJ with my 3 iron too. I had just gotten my FiberBuilt FlightDeck and I kept getting 'no-reads' with my 3 wood and 3 iron. While a seemingly good shot was bouncing it's way back to me I took a baseball swing to hit the ball again and caught the top of the FMJ. It knocked the FMJ along with the ST over on it's side and the ST turned it's self off. I was able to set it back up and didn't have any problems other than my bruised ego.

Of course I learned it was just an adjustment needed with the height if the FMJ to have the ST read all of my shots...

I think I've hit it only once while swinging, but I've had a few come out of the cage and bounce against it. No problems with the unit after.

I have hit mine 3 or 4 times. The most recent was last week. I hit a shank and the ball hit the FMJ and moved the unit about 6 inches. I replaced it and everything was fine.

Thanks. Good to know it does seem to protect. I was concerned that, with a solid hit, even if the unit suffered no visible damage the shock could affect the unit in a way that might not produce accurate data (at least that is what Skytrak tech support says.). So far that has not been the case in my experience, and I'm not reading it here.
