  • iPhone, iPad/Tablet, or PC - Which is Best for SkyTrak?

    Hi All,

Apologies in advance if this topic has already been covered (I did a quick search but didn't find anything).

Also, I'm not very technical, so this may come as a stupid question, but I was wondering what most people use (iPhone, tablet, or computer) to connect to their SkyTrak.

I only use the ST for practice right now (no sim), so I've been using my iPhone for the last year and haven't had any major issues other than it can be difficult to change yardages on the smaller screen. Anyway, I was considering purchasing a new iPad/tablet (or possibly a PC dedicated for use on the ST) and was wondering if there were any significant advantages to using one of those over the iPhone. Down the road I would like to try one of the sims so I know that will require a PC, but I first have to figure out how to get internet out to the detached garage (wifi extender didn't do the trick) where my practice area is.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I've used PC (Laptop with integrated graphics) and a fast Android phone with SkyTrak. Both work well for me.
Internet is not needed for either the SkyTrak software or Creative Golf 3D.
I chose Creative Golf 3D because it runs great on a laptop. E6 and TGC make my laptop cry.

      Hi Jerome,

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I usually connect directly to the ST from my phone. I was not aware that you didn't need internet for Creative Golf. How does that work? Do you just install/download them onto your computer? What kind of requirements would I need for a laptop? Hoping to get a cheaper one, this way I can convince (read: lie) my wife that she'll get some use out of it too.

Recommended minimum PC hardware for best performance of CG3D:
      •OS: Windows 7, 8 or 10 Compatible
      •Processor: 2.4GHz
      •Memory: 2 GB
      •Graphics: 512MB w/ Pixel Shader 3.0
      •DirectX: Version 9
•Network: Broadband Internet connection (it is necessary only for online update - you can update also manually without internet connection)
      •Hard Drive 10GB available space
      •Sound Card: DirectX 9.0 compatible

This specification meets most of today's notebooks.

    HI

I guess it depends on what you need.

If you need to be very portable, then Ipad is your best bet and you can use WGT for sim (which most say is not the best, but i enjoy WGT.)

If you are going to be portable with a laptop, then CG3D for sim play is probably best since its not demanding on a laptop.

If you have a dedicated sim area, well then forget ipad and get a gaming PC and the best software you can afford.

but for portability and quick set up and ease of use, ipad pretty good with the touch screen for WGT etc...

    regards
    Happy

Thanks Happy. That makes sense re: portability. I don't take the ST to the range or anything, so it's just a short walk from the house to the garage. I did think about a gaming PC, but I wouldn't be able to leave it out in the garage during the winter, so I realize that laptop or iPad is a better option for me as I write this. Just so I'm clear, does WGT require an internet connection to use with the iPad? Thanks for the help.

      Hi

      WGT needs an internet connection.
      CG3D does not.

If you decide to go the laptop route. try to get a laptop with a touch screen, then you can use your laptop like an ipad when playing CG3D. No need to bother with the mouse or mouse pad during play, just point and touch to different views angles aim etc....

I find Using a PC is good for every thing I do at home but for taking it out to the range a cellphone or tablet is the answer.

      Yes,

going to the range, android or iphone does the job well, and less stuff to carry, but since i got skytrak i never go to the range anymore.

Yeah I get it, I don't bring it much just every now and then to prove to myself again that it's accurate. :-)

I have an iPad Pro and have only practiced with the GIP options and played simulated rounds in WGT. Not knowing how any of the other sims work I am happy with the WGT and the iPad Pro works flawlessly. I eventually want to get an impact screen and a projector for my garage, hopefully by next Winter. Once I get going on my sim area I might consider getting a gaming PC/Laptop. However, the extra charges for the other sims is a little overwhelming.
