  • Skytrak connection to network mode with iPad Pro

    Hi everyone,

I have looked through post on this forum hoping for some help but I can't seem to find the answer. I have contacted Skygolf and was disconnected two times halfway through helping me even though they were having me do the basic stuff that I had done already countless times before someone offered to get me to their next level of support. I have yet to receive this call back and am frustrated at the lack of keeping a scheduled call on their end and can't seem to get anyone else to help as their hours of support don't work with my work/school schedule. I am having trouble with getting a connection to network mode while using my iPad Pro. The device will connect no problem in direct mode but I can't get it to recognize the network and when it does connect it only will be connected for a few seconds and then it is searching for the device on the network thus not allowing me to play one hole on WGT. I have tried two different routers as my primary is a Netgear Orbi unit and I have also tried an Apple AirPort Extreme with neither helping.

When I go through the process of setting it up in network mode it starts by not even finding my network when doing the scan for networks. I have tried this both where I have my unit set up to hit and directly next to the router and there is no difference. When I am set up I am about 12 feet from my router in direct line of sight so there isn't anything it has to go through to reach the unit. I have to enter the network in manually (there is one space in the network name but I have also tried to remove this and it makes no difference, also no numbers or special characters in the name or the password). When I enter it this way on the right side where the signal strength is it shows 2 bars out of the five available even though I am either next to it or within 12 feet. Also have tried set up on my phone and it makes no difference as the same problem occurs.

Any help into getting this to work would be greatly appreciated. I have reset everything many times hoping that maybe one time it would actually work but to no avail. The device works great in direct mode so Im able to use it for the range and other built in features just can't get the course play that I paid an extra 100 for.

You need to make sure that you are using a routers 2.4ghz band not the 5ghz band. Also, you need to make sure the ipad is not switching back and forth between a 2.4 and 5 band. Others have had this problem. I think they renamed the 2.4 so they know it's only connected to that.

I have done this as well as turning off the 5ghz network completely and still nothing. Scanning it won't find a single network when I manually enter it won't even allow me to attempt to connect to the network.

Hi there, I'm not sure if this will help you or not but I had massive issues in the beginning keeping my ipad pro connected as it just kept dropping. I eventually used an app called AirPort Utility to discover what network traffic was using the same channel as my router. I discovered a problem on my current channel and changed it through my router to a channel with no traffic and now stays connected all of the time. Maybe something you could try.

This may be a stab in the dark but I noticed you are an Orbi mesh router user. I also use this (1 router with 2 satellites) and there has been ongoing connection related issues with Orbi for months. You can read all about it on their support forums... so just make sure you are not being hit by an issue with the router/satellite itself vs. SkyTrak.

I had to downgrade my Orbi firmware to a semi stable version (avoid 2.2.x for now)..

          router (rbr40) - v2.1.3.6
          satellites (rbs40) - v2.1.3.6

Frodaddy00... Did down grading seem to work with connection to the SkyTrak? When you set yours up does it show up in the scan for networks or did you have to manually enter it in? I will have to see about downgrading the firmware if that will work but I have also tried a different router and that doesn’t do anything even setting it up for 2.4 only. I’m just getting really annoyed with the fact I cant play a round on the app after I purchased the higher package from SkyTrak. Curious was it on the Orbi support forums of SkyTrak’s? Thanks for the insight there. I’m hoping to get ahold of skytrak this Friday. Last week I would have but it was way to nice here in the PNW so I had to go play on an actual course.

Well the downgrade improved my wifi network for all devices including SkyTrak. The bad firmware versions would result in daily drops of all the devices from the network requiring the router to reboot. Honestly if this was your problem you'd know it because your wifi would drop everywhere on a repeated basis.

If your SkyTrak is having a problem connecting to wifi even when its next to it then it sounds like some type of interference. Do you have a metal case for it? Try taking that off just to see if that is the root cause. The only other thing I can think of is wireless home phones or microwave etc that is conflicting with the 2.4GHz signal.

The other consideration is that your wifi hardware in the SkyTrak is faulty and they may have to replace it.

Ive tried with and without the FMJ. When I first got it it didn't have the case so I don't think that was it. All my other devices have been running fine but I have also had just the iPad and the skytrak on and tried that so no other devices were on. I have some time today so im going to call now and hopefully get to the bottom of this.

I am 100% apple and have a SkyTrak on the way. So I will be of no help, yet. But I am researching setup, alignment and connection tips and tricks (be nice if everyone here were to add their findings to the "Tips and Tricks" post and make it a sticky) for future reference. It would also be in the manufacturer's and retailer's best interest to contribute to that as well, as it will certainly lessen all the BS support calls on basic things that better documentation, FAQs or the "Tips and Tricks" could solve.

Anyway I read somewhere about someone with issues and they recommend a 192.168.x.x over the 10.x.x.x ip range (which is Apple and most other higher end routers IMO). I also remember something like don't use any special characters or spaces in your wifi brodcast id, etc.

These things should not matter at all. But then again their are a lot of bad, lazy programmers out there and certainly could be an issue.

If you try these and it seems to help (or not) please follow up here as this could be a very common issue for a lot of people.

dziuky I found the link. Let us know how you make out!

Oddly, my Skytrak was working extremely well with my iPad pro for several months, and just recently (maybe after the most recent iOS update?) it has been almost unusable in network mode. At best I can get 2 shots off before the yellow light comes on and I lose connection.

I just got my ST yesterday. Charged it over night.
I will be testing it this weekend.
I have an iPad Pro and iPad Mini 4 and I guess will be holding off upgrading them until I see how this pans out.

Fingers crossed. Wish me luck. Lol

It’s been a bit and forgot to get back to here. I was on the phone with them and got it working. The poor signal showing up apparently will happen every time and doesn’t change so thats just a poor flaw in the app. I was able to get it working on both of my routers granted most of the time I still just use the direct mode as the WGT app is horrible. Part of the problem was trying to utilize it on the WGT app I made the mistake of having the SkyTrak app open which was causing the interference. While it doesn’t connect as smoothly as I’d want it too with the setup wizard I do have it connected and am able to use it. Obviously if you can make sure your router isnt going between 2.4 and 5 and it does have better connection but for the most part with the Orbi router I haven’t had a problem. If you can split them like you can on most routers minus the Orbi I would recommend that.

Have you updated your iPad to the latest iOS version? I got some weird results the other week and realized I was a few updates behind - problem solved. But if it's going yellow light, can you immediately check and make sure your iPad hasn't jumped to another network in the background?
