  • Skytrak - Significantly Low Spin Rates

    Hi All,

I've had my skytrak now for 2+ years. I love the unit, gives me an excuse to practice when I'm too lazy or too busy to go to the range.

However, I think my skytrak spin rates are significantly off. I've been taking lessons at a place that uses trackman and gcquad. Both units are hit indoors and both units hit off a mat.

I use my skytrak outdoors, only in the shade and it reads perfect. However, when I am hitting off trackman or gcquad, my 7 iron spin gets pretty close to 6-7k whereas my 7 iron spin for my skytrak has NEVER been above 4-5k. I've hit 3-4k shots now with all types of different clubs.. My 58 never gets above 8k spin which seems like an issue.

I only use premium balls and have cycled through different brands. I am currently hitting off of a country club elite mat.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

    Thanks!!!

Adding to this in case its asked -

    Decent ball striker- 12 hcp.

It seems like the longer clubs are more accurate in terms of spin.. for example 6 irons will spin ~ 4k.. but 8 iron spins max 8k..

I concede that I don't spin the ball a TON, but I find it odd that I've never been able to get my 8 iron to 8k when I do it relatively consistently on gcquad or trackman (unless I get it heavy).

Unit does not sit on the mat, unit is leveled etc.

    Thanks,

I see the same exact thing. Spin is way low for me too. Everyone on here will say it's the mat but I think the SkyTrak gives you inaccurate ball speed and spin data when used outside AND the sun light is the primary light source.

Can you try comparing your data during the day vs. night?

Would be hard to hit it at the same time with gcquad...but hit it the same time when on trackman and see what you get.

When there is any sun light whatsoever I see my ball go straight right, with slice spin and a 15% drop in ball speed. It's really frustrating. The only time my SkyTrak is anything more than a $2k paper weight is when used indoors or at night. It's too bad that this is not mentioned anywhere on the ST website when you're purchasing. I think many outdoor users like me will be very disappointed when they realize the outdoor limitations.

I will give it a shot next to the trackman next time I go to practice there.

I only use mines outside (usually in the shade) and have used mines at night as well (both still significantly low spin rates).

I actually find that the ball speed and carry distances are relatively accurate. I have no idea if the side spin is accurate, but I highly assume that the overall flight of my shots are accurate in comparison to where it would have actually gone.

I am in no way complaining, because my unit works, it reads well, it works outside and overall picks up almost everything (except spin) accurately.

Will update the thread when hit against the trackman with more accurate #'s
