  • 10k+ Backspin with Driver

Last few days I've been getting a lot of 10-11k backspins off my driver on SkyTrak. Is it even possible to get 10-11k backspin on a driver? Or is my SkyTrak getting bad readings? Same type of golf ball as before using same driver - just didn't hit many balls since Christmas so maybe a bit rusty and developed a bad swing? Any thoughts will be highly appreciated, and thanks.

I don’t think it’s possible. The face is too flat

That's what I thought too. I couldn't even get that kind of backspin w my wedges. But have been getting these 10k+ backspin readings off driver only (other clubs are fine) - even tried a different driver and similar results.

After my studio been unused a while I tend to have missreads.
The lens on the ST is clogged with dust. Whip of and good to go again.

Yeah I thought of that too. So wiped lenses. Maybe need to remove FMJ and wiped clean again. Thanks.

Cracks on ball, driver or SkyTrak? I used new balls but same thing. Tried different driver but still higher (i.e., 5k) backspin. Thanks.

I’m convinced every SkyTrak has an angry six-inch gremlin living inside of it. Unfortunately it sounds like yours just woke up...

Haha. I might need to change subject of thread to "How to kill the Gremlin?" =)

You can get high back spin with a driver. I have not seen 10k but my buddy will every now and again swing his more like an iron and get 8k. It's typically when his approach angle is super steep and he catches it off the toe. His swing speed reads way over what he can swing also when this happens.

My son and I will get occasional readings that are 10,000 - 12,000 with our drivers, but these are completely bogus readings. If it's happening literally every single swing for several sessions in a row, I would question the integrity of my SkyTrak unit.

I’ve had a few crazy spin numbers with driver. They are normally caused by an excessively steep swing or a damaged ball.

I replaced w new ball to rule out possible damaged ball. I just found it hard to believe that even w extremely steep angle of attack a driver (Titleist 917 D2 FYI) would cause of 10-11k backspin when most backspin I've been able to get w a wedge is only ~8k.

Ok just tested again w new ball but also different driver (in case problem was w my normal driver) and removed FMJ case in case that might have been cause of the problem. Still getting 8-11.5k backspin on ~10% of driver shots (including one at 8k+ backspin using my 3 wood). Maybe SkyTrak_Seth can chime in to comment if this is normal or my SkyTrak's gremlin has come ALIVE...

I could regularly get 10,000 with a 7 or 8 iron when I was using Skytrak. Those shots felt like I struck it really well but would only travel 100/110 yards and I know that my real spin numbers with those irons were probably half that.
I eventually put it down to a combination of my swing where I had excessive forward press and was delofting the club too much and the also the mat that I was using.
I changed my set up position reducing club lean angle to more neutral position and tried to concentrate on not delofting at impact and the high spin shots virtually disappeared.
I am using a CC type mat which I think is a big factor with certain types of misreads when I was using the Skytrak. I don't know the technicality of how the mat performs but I think that the combination of the way I was striking the ball in conjunction with the way the mat interacts at strike was enough to confuse my Skytrak.
I know from the feel of the iron shots that registered 10,000 that they were good strikes and should have travelled 140/150 so for me a definite misread.
I did not do anything other than change my set up position and concentrate on my strike and not deloft and the high spin misreads went away.

By chance did you change any lights recently to led bulbs and this problem showed up ? Reason I ask is I bought a cheap Amazon led light to light the strike area on my setup. I thought it was a good idea but I seemed to get really weird hits from time to time and misreads that I thought shouldn't be ...The light it produced was very nice and even but if you were to say just look at the area for a little time something seemed off and just kinda bothered me. I came to realize that the cheap light had a flicker to it... to explain it wasn't 60hz like power in the USA should be. The more I used it the more obvious it became and I took the light down and my issues instantly stopped. Just a thought maybe it's something in the setup or maybe try and reset it ? it's odd that your woods seem to be affected how about the other clubs ?

              Thanks for the insights.
              - Haven't changed any lighting so that doesn't seem like potential cause of issues.
              - Thanks for the reminder on resetting. Will def try to reset (resetting has helped before when problems came up even though been told many times resetting does not reset the machine but simply resets the network info).
              - And yes def weird problem only shows up w woods but not any of the other clubs...

Ok tried reset, didn't help. So with new ball I tried to use slower swing speed to recreate attached shots using my driver (are 2-9 degree draw shots physically possible to be at 10k+ backspin?).

Not with that launch angle and especially the one with 2deg. The only possibility would be if you had top spin and you wouldn't have a 13deg launch angle on a worm burner. Have you tried to compare on TGC practice range and see if you get the same results? It would be a good test to see if its a unit or software issue.
Recently, my ST has been going wacky with tons of shots not registering woods and hybrids on TGC (I don't use the skytrak app for practice). Also, my chips reading either crazy long or crazy short but it comes in bursts where game will work fine and then go wacky. Might be best to clear the file from you computer if TGC shows the same thing, and reinstall and see if that clears it up.

I had the same issue after I got a new driver last year and I was completely perplexed with the high spin numbers. I was doing some lessons over FaceTime with an instructor and he noticed that I still had the stickers on my shaft. Once I removed the stickers I started seeing 'normal' back spin numbers with the driver. Stickers or a white shaft could be the culprit for the high spin numbers.

Haven't been able to play in the past 10 months but I did get a few 10k spin from the driver. I don't remember it happening on the SkyTrak range app but it did happen while playing the TGC (had to take a rewind each time). Fortunately it isn't a prevalent thing, just some rare & random behavior. No damage on the ball or club or any environmental difference than my normal set up.

Unfortunately this rare & random non-prevalent behavior has become rather prevalent to me. Wonder if SkyTrak_Seth can chime in on what might cause these type of backspin readings off driver (which seems beyond the boundaries of physics)...

Did you get a chance to let someone else test it out? Ball speeds super low.. is that a normal number?

I was just swinging a bit slower to recreate the high backspin shots. But I'm old so my normal ball speed is only around 125 mph anyways.
          Working...
