  • I'm so stupid..........

Soooooo My buddy and I are fairly competitive in golf. He has been playing for a lot longer than I have so has always had a bit of an edge as I only got serious this past year. I always had the advantage off the tee as I hit a pretty straight ball, not crazy far but straight, so never really in much trouble off the tee. He has a slice that rears it's head 8 out of 10 drives so is always in trouble but his iron game is spot on so could always surpass me. Our driver distances have always been about the same. By the end of the season we were pretty much neck and neck for scores with a slight advantage to him due to my lack of consistency. As I am not one to take anything I do lightly or someone that likes to get beaten...…..Enter the sim install.

Since I get to play on the sim all the time my game has improved in consistency significantly. As stated I have always had a real straight drive. In the ever elusive quest for more distance I screwed up my swing and have been working hard to fix it. In that journey I have gotten pretty good at figuring out how to remedy an issue when it arises. So my driver is now back to normal and my irons/wedges significantly better. I have this up coming year in the bag. I'm so excited.....while he is in the woods I will be hitting straight down the middle with much better approach shots there is no way he catches me this year…. right? Not so fast there hot shot!

As I am such a super nice guy I want to share my sim with my buddy. He comes over usually once a week to play and can now see I am beating him by a pretty wide margin in TGC so going to be giving him a run for his money IRL as he still has that god awful slice. All the while I am sitting back just grinning, finally I will be able to win a round IRL this sim is going to pay dividends...……....…....two scotches later...…... I have no idea what possessed me but since I am now the self proclaimed king of fixing slices I tell him you need to close your stance a bit...and...…. put...….. the ............ball …......back …...just..... a …...touch...…........I can NOT believe what is coming out of my big mouth....as I am saying the words my brain is saying shut up you idiot...........oh no......what did I just do? Ok, settle down maybe it won't work...... ya that's it bad advise it won't work...….holding my breath now as he lines up and cranks the next 20 balls right down the middle with a nice little draw which added like 30 yds to his drive. My worst fears realized and all my fault...….He looks over at me and says "thanks buddy for installing that $8k sim and fixing my slice"...……….I am so stupid...….lol.

can you please come over and fix my slice?

I also have a buddy in pretty much the same situation as you. He had been playing golf on and off for a few years at about 10 years ago but nothing serious. Im coming to the end of my career and thought i would take up this game, so 3 years ago i went to the local driving range with a pile of clubs and started my new hobby. He came with me a few times and we both decided to invest in some gear and join the local club. he advanced better than me due to his past history in the game and i started with a nasty slice. It was so bad that i had to aim WWWWWWay to the left and hit over the woods to get somewhere near the fairway. It was embarrassing. I had lessons, watched youtube, read books and tips from others but nothing is getting rid of it. I decided to kick the car out into the drive and convert the garage into my sim man cave and am working on that disability we call a slice.

so similar situation in inviting my mate to play with me now he is 8 HC points in front of me and im stuck due this slice....

Oz, I can do Rum I'm not picky......lol. As to the theory. It's pretty simple few of us are 28 Y/O's old, 6'4" 200 lbs of muscle with the athletic ability the pros have but that's the swing everyone teaches and we all try to replicate. I am a very visual person before I can fix something I have to understand it and see it. Until I saw a really old youtube video where a guy drew out club head orientation and path for each type of outcome I really never understood what I was trying to do. This was the start of figuring out what I was doing wrong. What you have tried is a good chunk of what worked for me. With a couple things that might help. On the back swing instead of worrying about where it is on path I focus on making sure my glove hand back side is pointing straight down by doing this it insures I am not opening up to far on contact. Next close your stance slightly. There are two ways to do this. One is to just take your square stance and simple rotate it clock wise slightly assuming your right handed. The other it to take your right foot and instead of having it flair out or straight turn it in slightly kind of pigeon toed. I have found this is big help in getting the inside out swing we need for a good shot. Once you have these see where the ball is going and adjust the placement forward and back a bit in your stance. If you do all these you should be hitting a hook or draw so the start of getting rid of the slice. Good Luck.

Again my theory is no two people will ever swing exactly the same so have to find what works for us. When I watch all my buddies we all hit about the same distance, none of his even a remotely close swing. The older gentleman of our group has a 1/4 back swing and stops his swing at impact but hits it the same distance was all do and dead straight. There is no one swing that works for all.

Cheers dude, i will give that a go. to be honest feet placement has not entered my adjustments until you mentioned it. I was playing on the course the other day and i was practicing the above and was getting some really good and confident results. maybe the foot placement will finish the job and i will be entering that "draw" shot. At the moment the slice has turned into a strong fade, but im hitting more fairways than i have been before.

Oz, That's right about when mine and my buddies all came together. We are talking very minor movements once you are hitting a fade. Cheers!

Wait till you're on the first tee and tell your buddy that the Skytrak was mis reading that night and that he's still a slicer. If he aims a little left then you're golden.

Hahah I did a similar thing... My buddy is a really good golfer. I bought the sim and now he comes over and basically coaches me. I've gotten better to the point where we are pretty competitive in the closest to the pin challenges. He crushes me 120 and shorter, but I tend to get him at 150+. The amount of time and money I would have spent on balls by now at the range would be somewhere in the range of $1K in the past year... I even got my wife swinging a bit. Not well. but hey who cares!
