Static Electricity Blew-Up SkyTrak?

Just went thru interesting exercise with my SkyTrak. Have been using is just fine for the last 2 years and went to install TGC2019 and BAM.....SkyTrak will not turn on. Went thru the whole song and dance with customer service to diagnose and they eventually asked for it to be sent in.

Got a call from SkyTrak and they said the device was destroyed by what looked like was static. Anyone else had this happen? I don't leave it plugged in long periods of time and only use it via USB with a FMJ metal case. I use it in the garage in the midwest and it is on hitting mat which is on concrete.

On the hitting mat is where the static came from, they generate a huge amount of static when being struck by a lump of metal, you will at times even see them spark up

Wonder if it would be a good idea to stick a rubber mat under it then....
