  • Skytrak and Garage Setup Questions

I want to thank everyone for the information provided on Skytrak and etc. I am a new Skytrak owner (on its way) and my setup is as follows:

    1. I am right handed (5'9") and my daughter is left handed (5'1")
    2. Will be in a heated two car garage that is 20x17. One of the stalls will be wide open and the other will have a car that will be moved when I use the Skytrak.
    2. I am not going full sim but will be using a 10x10 Net that is portable with a 60 inch tv (already had) on a stand.
    4. I have the larger SwingTurf mat (4x9). I think I can place it on center to the net so lefty and righty can hit on center to net.
    5. I have some horse stall mats (already had) and foam tiles to place under the mat to keep in place and for rebound of the golf balls.
    6. I currently have an Ipad Pro or a non gaming laptop that I can use to sync the Skytrak to Ipad/computer and then hdmi to TV.
    7. I plan on just using the Play and Improve app.
    8. MY MAIN ISSUE IS LACK OF INTERNET. I am not able to get WIFI to the garage (trust me I have tried everything).
    9. I understand that I can get around this but I get a sense that I will get bored?? with just skytrak Play and Improve and WGT doesn't allow local multi player.
    10. I have looked at the TGC19 software. I will need to purchase a gaming computer. If I understand correctly I can play offline (limited courses)

    My question(s) is as follows:

Is it worth purchasing a gaming computer and the TGC19 sub. to just play the offline courses with multiplayer local??
Should I just wait and see my mileage with Skytrak app and if that gets boring then go for the above? Again, I am not going full sim with a projector and screen.
The main reason to purchase skytrak is to practice swing for both daughter and I and not playing rounds online.
If I can't get the mat centered on net for both lefty and righting is it a big deal to have both players be a little offset from center?
Any other things I am missing?

Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to having the skytrak this winter.

I was a Skytrak user in a garage setup. I have recently transitioned to Uneekor. You may want to address WiFi if you are going to use Skytrak with an iOS device. Don’t think you will have access to much on Skytrak if you are not in Network mode which I believe requires a a stable WiFi connection. Perhaps others here can chime in on that.

-- I'm pretty sure you can access everything in Skytrak in direct mode or USB mode. WGT requires having internet and being connected in network mode so that's not an option with no internet.

-- TGC2019 has around 32 courses you can play in offline mode. It's a big purchase and well worth the money. However, if you can't fully utilize the software by playing all the other courses and playing in tournaments then you'd have to decide if it's still worth it. I think it just depends on personal preference. I can't just hit balls on the Skytrak range for more than about 20 minutes without getting bored. I like to play. Other people can hit balls for hours and never get bored with it. I'm the same way in outdoor golf. Just not a range rat. Others are. No right or wrong answer here.

-- Hitting offset is really no big deal.

May I ask what the difficulty is in getting WiFi? The reason I ask is I also had issue with getting WiFi inside a metal garage that is about 150 feet from my house, I tried multiple extenders but could not penetrate the metal, all was lost until I watched a YouTube video with a guy showing how to get WiFi into his RV camper, so anyway i followed his instruction and was able to get WiFi from my house to the outbuildings using a device from Amazon “. Ubiquiti NanoStation loco M2

There was quite a few settings I had to make but basically just had to put this in a window and point it toward my house. Not the fastest speeds, think I’m getting like 15 mb/s last I checked. It runs my ring video cameras fine as well as my optishot.

Mine is setup in my 2 car garage where I keep one car in and move the other out. Granted the other is on a lift.... I would say this. If you are going to buy TGC2019, you really should get wireless or wired connection out there... How far is your garage from your house? I would recommend running Cat6 out there if you are going to do this right.

I started out with just the Skytrak and the Game Improvement package, but after a year I purchased TGC2019 and built a computer and never looked back. Its made my golf experience so much better!

Also hitting offset is no big deal either...

Thank you for all of the comments. My issue with internet is somewhat two fold. The first; I am using a family members garage (across the street) that goes south for the winter and they turn off their internet for 5 months when they travel south. (I am located in South Dakota). I have debated whether I just pay for internet access for the time they are gone with the cost being $100 per month. With that said, I have been doing some tests right now with the internet working and the signal is pretty weak in the garage. I could add some boosters, move their router, etc but that all feels like a pain. As others have stated, I will have to determine the pain vs. reward of having wifi so I can run TGC19 online or just stick with the Skytrak Play and Improve/TGC19 offline limited courses.

Probably just see how it goes without wifi and if the daughter and I get bored we can bite the bullet and get wifi (cost and some other mods) to the garage. I don't mind hitting the range and since I am not going sim with a projector/screen that is probably the first step and go from there.

In response to question #8. EDIT: ( sorry just saw that you are using internet across the street, that makes running coax an issue).

My polebarn is 300 feet away from my house and I needed internet in order to use my Skytrak in my simulator room which I built in the polebarn. I buried coax cable all the way and then used 2 MCO ethernet over coax adapters. One adapter at the router in my house and another in the sim room. In a nut shell, the adapter puts your unscramble filtered internet service onto the coax, the second adapter pulls it off. I plugged an ethernet switch into the adapter and then plugged my computer and a wifi extender into the switch. I also was able to split the coax and put a cable TV box in.

The end result is full broadband cable and interent with wifi in my barn. It works seamlessly. I run Skytrak, TGC 2019, and a flat screen TV at the same time with no delays.

The adapters are made by Motorola, bought them on Amazon. I highly recommend them.
