  • Are there any iOS-compatible SkyTrak course apps available to play offline?

No WiFi where I practice. Thx

E6 Connect has an iOS app that allows for offline play. You'll need to connect to the internet to download courses to your device, and to occasionally re-authenticate the validity of your software license. You should be aware that E6 Connect/TruGolf have made some interesting decisions about how things like lie penalties and wind work on the SkyTrak version of their app. I recommend reading or watching a few reviews before you make a purchase. TruGolf has a demo for their PC version, but I'm not sure if you can demo the iOS version before purchasing a subscription.

Can you explain a little on the "lie penalties" as I'm thinking about buying the E6 for my skytrack ios.

I know they added Wind & Elevation for SkyTrak recently, but I have not tested the lie penalties (Spin and Power reductions out of rough, sand, etc) on the iOS version yet. If these are not important to you then you are fine. You also can turn off wind and elevation if you want and if penalties do work you can turn those off too.

Sure thing. Over the years, sim software/hardware companies have tried different ways of penalizing players who hit it in the rough/sand. GolfZon, for example, includes special turf inserts that you hit from and Fiberbuilt used to sell 1' x 1' panels for sand and rough, in addition to their well-known fairway cut hitting strip.

In recent years, most companies have settled on using software tweaks to provide a disincentive for players to miss the fairway. A launch monitor will take your raw shot data, and the sim software will apply a penalty algorithm. Usually that means a reduction in spin (for both sand and rough) and some companies include a percentage chance that your ball speed will be increased by the algorithm (to simulate a flyer lie).

When TruGolf first released E6 Connect, one strange wrinkle was that the SkyTrak version did not include a penalty algorithm. If you found the sand, you could hit a "regular" shot and expect the software to simulate your actual backspin, rather than a simulated reduction. Unfortunately, this severely reduced player's incentive to be accurate, and neutered things like fairway bunkers because the software failed to artificially account for reduced spin.

The last time I looked closely at iOS E6 Connect was a little over a year ago, and at that time there were no lie penalties. Additionally, the software did not account for elevation (where a ball at sea level carries shorter than a ball hit on a mountain course), and the software did not account for wind (though it still showed an icon for wind, for some confusing reason.) Fortunately, TruGolf has been updating E6 Connect regularly, and I believe that wind and elevation are now accounted for. If having lie penalties is important to you (and it may not be if you just want simulation as a change of pace) I'd still read/watch more recent reviews to see what the software accounts for nowadays. You can also read the update notes on TruGolf's webpage, though they can be somewhat undescriptive at times.
