  • New Skytrak user getting weird results

I finally bit the bullet and bought a skytrak last week. I am having some issues
    1) I cant seem to get my wifi to connect through the sky trak. On my ipad I can connect to the skytrak and to my wifi independently but when I try to use networking mode it says unable to join network. This also means I cannot register the device.

    2) this is most important..the distances are way off. I was hitting a 6 iron last night in direct mode and it was going 130 (175 club). I am a 10 handicap so I am pretty sure I am not hitting it 130. I was not too anal on setting the unit up with alignment but I think I am close. The unit is sitting on a mat level with the hitting surface and I am putting the ball directly on the red dot.

Please help..I do not want to have to send this back.

    thanks

    Me too

You'll have a new unit coming your way soon. Please let me know via email (that's fastest) how it works out. Very, very strange stuff.

Regarding the connection problem. I have a similar issue.
Here is how I think it works. Once the Skytrak has been "married" to you home router it will automatically connect to it and stop transmitting it's network Id. E.g. you can't connect in direct mode anymore. If your WiFi router connection is not stable, you will be stuck and have lots of random issues.
In my case it works fine when the family is not at home or in bed. When my kids are home and play their online games using the same router. It works kind of but with all kind off issues incl. very long delays or lost connection.
So now I am trying to figure out how to reset the Skytrak unit and remove the home router so it does not connect anymore. So far no luck.
      Seth any suggestions?

You are correct. If you put the unit in network mode, as long as you are within that network's range then it will remain in network mode and automatically connect to it. You can tell this by the solid middle light. Because it is connected to the network, it no longer puts out it's own Wi-Fi signal so that's why you don't see it when you look in your iPad's list of available networks.

NOTE AGAIN: If the unit is in network mode (connected to your network), then it does not show up as SKYTRAK****** anymore in the iPad Wi-Fi list.

If you are in network mode, you can go ahead and connect in the app, then choose "Direct Mode". This will reset the device and you can find it in the Wi-Fi stack again. If for some reason you cannot get it to connect in the software, then you'll need to hard-reset the unit. Stick a paperclip in the center of the brass insert on the bottom of the unit and hold for 10 seconds. You will see all 3 lights turn yellow - that indicates that the unit has been reset.

I did not gather from the initial post though that this was the issue with his Wi-Fi.

Thanks! I will try this later today.
A bad WiFi connection or a congested router definitely creates all kinds of problems. Incl. long delays between shot and display.

Just curious, but was your unit one of the marked down units for the tiny scratch on the front ??

My unit was the marked down unit, not sure if this is contributing to 1. slow shot display (25 seconds in either direct or network mode, IPAD3 no other apps running, nor router congestion problems); and 2. progressively shorter distances.

Bubba22 - I tested for about 5 hours and I guess I just got too frustrated with the readings (trying it slighlty higher than level, slightly below, and moving around red dot). I had no WIFI problems - that worked great. I really wanted to love it. I've got a lefty in the family and room for FS so I may go that route.

Hopefully the FS will fit your needs. Keep us posted.

I cannot even use the thing to try it out again.

The picture with the level on top of the unit isn't really leveled because the level isn't sitting parallel on the unit. The level is being raised on the left side by the lip of the unit. It'll account for a few degrees, I don't know if this will make a difference.

Good catch yeah not really level on that lip. Has to be no more than a degree off.

@ DriverDivots, Yes I bought one of the "scratched" units...I could not find a scratch or anything wrong with it cosmetically though. Just bad readings and Wifi brodcast.

But you are able to directly connect with no problems srb165?

No one seems to have brought it up yet, I'm assuming that you are using new premium balls and not beat up ones? Skytrak is extremely sensitive, I've found that I would start losing significant yardage especially with longer irons and hybrids once a ball has been hit a few hundred times even if it still looks to be in okay shape.

In my opinion the distance issue is not caused by Skytrak, I think it’s an individual user issue. I returned from Myrtle Beach after playing 10 rounds so I knew the distances I was hitting all of my clubs. I downloaded the new update and all of my irons were coming up short by 20 yards?? I was not a happy camper as I thought the new update had something to do with it. I was going to make a post about the new software update not working correctly but first I wandered down to Golftown on my lunch hour. I was shocked that their launch monitor was giving me identical readings as Skytrak, ball speed and carry were both the same. So I left the store and I was convinced it was me and not ST. I went home that night and had the same results, I hit balls for about a hour and a half. I started tinkering with my swing and all of a sudden I’m back hitting my 7 iron 170-175 and gained those missing 20+ yards. if you’re doubting the ST distances I would back up your claim using another LM. I hit balls last night and my distance is gone again, frustrating game at times ! I just thought I would share my experience.

Thanks for sharing that! There are so many factors that can influence a person's swing and people may not realize that they hit the ball differently off a mat, swing differently indoors, etc. Not saying that's the case for the original poster, but definitely something to think about in general.

Bubba22 spotty some times I can see the skytrak network on my ipad sometimes not (75% not)

DMac69 I hear you but I live on a golf course and went to the range 2 times to verify. I just swung normal and my 6 iron is going 165-180.. not 130-137 that ST is reporting. Mp PW goes 135 in real life (consistent) and 105 on skytrak.
