  • "Shank" proof protection

Here it is, built tested and works like it was factory made :-) (Sorry Seth I could not resist)
In the attached images you see.
    1. 3D printer 12h in, printing the main box.
    2. The "driving range" protection.
    3. The full setup with the second level abuse resistant protection on top.
    4. Top view.
    5. Close up of the opening, with ball.

    It has
    1. Ventilation hole on top for getting rid of the heat.
    2. Bubble level holder that can be calibrated
    3. Adjustable target alignment laser holder. It looks like 2 x AAA battery lasers are 13.5mm diameter. So I can fit my bad ass green laser here as well.
    4. 3 adjustment screws that can be fitted from top or bottom. That is to cover all cases where it needs to be high or low above the surface it rests on.
    5. 12 additional threaded holes on the lid to mount other versions of lasers or combined laser + bubble level or whatever might come up later.

It has been tested with appr. 100 shots using wedges, drivers and a few clubs in between. Registers shots just like with a naked unit.

Drawback is that it's light and will fall over if hit by a fast ball or move out of place if hit by a bounce back. Not a big problem but could be annoying.
For that reason I use the second level protection while in the garage. On the driving range the plan is to use just that primary protection.
(Yes I will make a new second level protection box since this one is but ugly)

The 3D printed parts work OK but have a few flaws that need to be redesigned. If I ever build another one, those will be fixed. (not very likely, since the one I have now is good enough)
For that reason I have decided not to share the 3D-print files.
If you want to build your own unit you can still do it by building the box out of MDF or plastic or whatever you like. The tricky part is the position and size of the holes in front of the sensors.
For those that want to build a unit for personal use or for their friends, I will be happy to give you the drawing that shows where to place those openings.
For those that want to use this info to build units and sell them you will have to ask permission and make an offer.

In either case. If you are interested PM me.

    PS.
My version that you see in the pictures is for right handed players only. It is possible to build one for both but I wanted to have as few openings as possible.
And I don't know any lefties, none that I like anyway.

      Hi folks,

I was a silent follower of this forum, but now my Skytrak finally arrived (here in Munich, Germany, one of the first ones ). I will just use this post to introduce myself and start sharing from now on!

Big fan of Skytrak, I was following their progress since before the came to market in the US. I always had my eye on the GC2, but I did not want to spent 3,500$ on a used device
Anyway, I am also eagerly awaiting the release of TGC on ST, but since my Skytrak is just 4 days old, the wait was not that bad yet

I am building a setup (protection) from my unit as well and will attach a pic of what I have so far.

@davray666: I tried to open your PDF attachment as well but was also unsuccessful If you could try to share it again I would be extremly thankful.
I want to cut my front plate from a metal sheet and any trail an error would be quiet a bust.

So, thanks to anyone sharing on this forum,
      Antony

Seth you need to stay on topic. This section is for the shank proof protection. The official protection you supply does not qualify:-)

SkyTrak_Seth - Is this shipment of cases for existing orders or is there enough that if I ordered a case today, it would be shipped promptly?

I know that the entire lot did not go out at once, but I have no clue how many have already been ordered. I can check though.

Has anyone actually shanked a ball and hit their Skytrak?

I had a friend over that swung a hybrid, and wacked a ball off the toe of the club into mine. It turned off but continues to work... For now... Suffice it to say he's not a very good golfer. My 8 year old son came close too.

Me? Never even been close but seen it 2 times when friends where over.
Hybrid toe and driver toe. The hybrid was a 32 HCP lady and the driver was a 16 HCP guy I have played many rounds with. Never seen him miss like that on the course.
If you are a decent golfer and above all used to hitting in your sim environment then it's highly unlikely you will ever be even close. For everybody else, shit happens especially if you had a few and come down to the sim for some quick fun.

I will admit there may have been a few drinks partaken prior to the "incident" lol.

Interesting. I always refer to a shank as a ball that hits the hosel of the golf club. Maybe the title of the thread should be changed to drunk proof protection.

Was that a joke or are you trying to tell us that you are a vastly superior human being by not having any friends that are bad at golf?
Agree that the title is misleading since a shank will not hit the unit. But most people can kind of figure out what this is all about anyway.

              • #43
I personally have nicked the top of my unit and made a small dimple although it wasn't a shank it was a standing up practice/limber swing that unknowingly just clipped it. No damage as it really wasn't hard

Just trying to understand why people are so obsessed with shanking a ball into the Skytrak. I didnt think it was possible, but I didn't realize that the term was used for strikes that dont come off of the hosel.
