  • Driver issues with Skytrak

I'm sure this been answered before. Spent most of the morning trying to find my answer but not luck.

I finally bought a Skytrak and before work I had some time to try this unit out. So this is what I found from experience of only hitting maybe 20 balls.
I set the club to 9 iron on the Skytrak and grabbed my club and starting hitting away. I was disappointed right because I know I can hit my 9 iron 153-158 all day but was hitting it to only 140-145 on the Skytrak. So I went to change clubs to an 8 iron and when I picked the next iron up and looked at what club it was it was the 9 iron. So I looked at the club that I just hit and it was the pw. So I thought well that's awesome because that's what I hit my pw for that distance. So I grabbed the 9 iron and hit 5 balls and they all landed around the 153-158. So I was kinda impressed. Grab the 5 iron and hit 5 shots with it and they landed from 188-193 which is about the range I hit 5 iron. So at this point I'm just ecstatic that everything was lining up to what I normally do on the course. So I grabbed the driver and this is where I really got disappointed. Now I know how far I can my driver so I'm not a newbie or all the other excuses I have seen on here on why the ball doesn't fly has far has some guys actually think they can hit it. So anyways I hit 5 balls and I couldn't get one over 220 yards. Now normally my drives are between 270-290 irl. But what I noticed was on Skytrak they were all like a punch shot that slices 20 yards to the right. Now I know for a fact I don't have that swing in my bag and have never had a shot like that irl. So I looked at the numbers it was showing on the screen and this is what it showed.

    Ball speed. 164mph
Back spin rpm. 5600. Now I know this is at least double from any simulator I have played Mine is usually around the 2500.
Club speed was 110 which is a tad low. I'm around 115-118 on trackman. So with all those kind of stats I should never be at 200 yards. So here's my question. Has anybody else had this problem and if so. How did you correct it. Or do we have to wait for that supposedly update that's coming out shortly. Just trying to at least get 250yds out of it. Lol.

If you send us a picture of your setup we might be able to give you a few hints. How high is your tee peg and are you one of those long hitters that has a high positive AoA and hits up on the ball?

I have the same problem. I have my skytrak flat on my country club elite mat. I usually hit 270-300. My highest is 271 average is 252 with like 20 swings. I notice if I tee it higher it seems to go farther.

That is probably not influenced by Skytrak. If you tee up the ball higher and strike it properly without adding any additional back spin. It will launch higher and fly longer. So the Skytrak is probably correct on that result being longer.
The tall tee and high launch angle is only a problem if your launch is extreme like 3" tee with 25 deg launch.
So if we assume that you know your real life carry and that the ST is indeed wrong. Then the explanation is very complicated as to what could be wrong.
If you refer to a real life total vs. ST total including role out. Then you need to stop looking at that and focus on carry or adjust ST ground conditions to match the role out you expect. I have never bothered with that because I only look at carry, so I don't know how to adjust ground conditions or what the effect will be.

Without knowing the reported launch angle, my only thought is that is a crazy amount of spin for a 164mph ball. In the flightscope optimizer, it gives you a carry in the 250's for launch angles between 5 and 20 degrees for that ball speed and spin. Perhaps the flight model doesn't work out so well in the SkyTrak algorithm for such a high spin combined with high ball speed. Not sure why it is reading such high spin if you are confident your numbers are typically in the 2000's. Are the balls you used new and white? Try aligning the logo or alignment mark facing the camera.

Regarding club speed, the SkyTrak doesn't measure it- it only assumes a perfect smash factor of 1.48-1.49 and calculates it based on ball speed.

If I recall correctly, it also uses that smash factor for all shots, regardless of what club you selected, so your iron shots will have an under-reported club speed. I don't recall for sure, since I never look at club speed on this unit.

That's the other number I forgot to add. Normally on other launch monitors I show between 11-13 launch angle. With the Skytrak it was 8. Also with smash factor on trackman I'm between 1.38 and 1.48. I'm just figuring out if I need to do something different. One guy suggest moving the tee back an inch and see if the camera can pick it up.

So where is your tee/ball vs. the red laser dot? The Tee should be on top of the laser dot and could be moved back 1 or 2 inches if you normally have a VLA of 11-13 degrees.
The problem you avoid by moving it back is that your club head will not be in the picture with the ball and possibly disturb the vision processing.

So I went home and did some more testing since I had more time. This time I used my driver that I use on the course. The ball flight looks a little better and getting about 260 yards. 3 wood at 230 and hybrid at 210. So with those numbers I believe I'm about 20 yards short on all 3 of the woods. Not sure if I will ever get to be where it's realistic with the woods But I'm impressed with the irons.

We'll be adding a very small tweak for drivers in v2.1. You'll notice a difference with those ball speeds. However, I will say that our launch angle is super-accurate, so you were probably really launching the ball low that first time...maybe because it wasn't your normal driver.

That could explain the super-high spin, too. As an example, my properly-fitted driver will typically spin around 1900-2300, while I can spin other off-the-rack drivers into the 4000's.

Good to hear the tweak with drivers is coming. That is the only small complaint I have with the accuracy of my unit- I still feel like the driver is just a touch short. 164mph is the very top of my range, though. I'm usually around 157-162, but hopefully I will still see some difference with the v2.1??

Thanks for all the support, Seth!!

Also make sure altitude, temp setting, and humidity setting set to what you normally play in. I do 600 foot, 70% humidity, and 80* for the st louis area. Makes a big difference on longer shots, this is my own personal default setting. Wish it could be saved so I wouldn't have to adjust it everytime.

I was reading in another threat that the settings stay in the New 2.0 version.

I was also having a lot of trouble with my Woods with the skytrak hitting indoors. I even called them and got an RMA. Before I shipped it back I took it to the range. The damn thing was spot on in distance and ball flight. I hit my driver 275 - 300yd my 3 wood in the 240-255yd. Went home started hitting off my monster turf mat Driver 230yd 3 wood 165yd. Tossed out the Monster turf mat i was using and setup my old optishot mat(4'x5'). I am getting closer to course and range distances driver 255, 3 wood 230 but not quite there. I guess I have to get more comfortable with swinging the clubs indoors. PS anyone looking for a monster tee turf mat let me know going cheap.

Jagred, where are you located?--if relatively close I might be interested in your monster turf mat. You can PM me if you would like.

I'm having the same issue as well. I'm hitting some 5 irons with 210 yards carry while my driver is only carrying 235. Something doesn't seem right there. Tried moving the tee back and all, don't have any white on my driver and using fresh white balls. I'll keep on testing stuff though and see if anything works
