The red laser...do we need it?

Its pretty bright, and messes with me at address. I can see it reflecting on the ball and clubface. Staring at reflected laser-light for long periods cant be healty!

Is the laser used only to help us know where to the place the ball, or is it needed for the device to read the shot? I would like to cover the emitter with a piece of electrical table to block it, and just put a small marker on my hitting mat to show me where to place the ball..

    Is that a bad idea?

It's just a piece of tape, give it a try. The dot isn't used for reading the ball, just to make sure you keep it in the FOV. It would be nice if they give us the option to turn it off so that if you have a setup where you know the skytrak is positioned in the same spot every time, you don't really need it.

The red laser is only there to help you find the spot where to place the ball. You can cover it with a bit of tape if you like.

You should be able to position the ball just outside (towards your feet) the dot so that the red dot shines at the base of the ball and doesn't reflect on anything.
