I think you may be on to something with the distance loss due to spin. I hit some balls tonight and think that it is pretty much spot on with a 6 iron down. Through about 20 balls with my 6 iron my average was 176. Once I get to a 7 iron though it starts giving me numbers that don't correlate with what I see at the course.

My guess is that if you use a ball that reduces your spin a little you will see the distances you expect to see. When I use a ProV1 or similar golf ball I get similar spin numbers in the range of 8K with a 8/9 iron and 10K+ with my wedges. With spin numbers this high the ball just seem to fall out of the air on Skytrak. With spin numbers at 6K with my 8/9 iron, and 8K with my wedges I see the distances I would expect.
The good news is I do think that the actual spin numbers that the Skytrak is picking up are very accurate. I just dont think that in the real world that 2 well struck 9 irons, one with 8k spin, and the other with 6k have as wide of a gap in distance that the Skytrak displays.

8.5k - 9k spin with a 9 iron is perfect. 6k rpms would be similar to a flyer and would carry further and roll even further, which isn't a great way to play golf.
Sounds like your saying that the Skytrak's flight algorithm is penalizing too much for spin? Like too much lift applied?
Does the Skytrak app display angle of decent? If so, everything should be around 50* and driver should be around 40*.

That is exactly what I'm saying. I agree that 8.5-9K spin off of a 9 iron is good for a well struck shot in the real world, and that Skytrak seems to pick up the spin correctly. The issue is just that the algorithm seems a touch off.

Angle of descent is supposed to be added soon. I was told around thanksgiving but I doubt that happens.

New Skytrak.....used it all day and am very frustrated with distances. Close on Sand Wedge/gap wedge. Steadily worse after that. 5 wood which I would hit around 200 yes shows up at 155ish. Any reason I shouldn't send this back right away?

try using a tee and see if you have the same results. Most of us have monster type mats that rob a ton of yards if you hit behind the ball. Just ask Jimsol. He came over to my house and compared units. Unit to unit was dead on and the ball speeds compared closely to my radar unit.
-
I had this same issue with mine. Wedges were very close, mid irons were 20-30 yards short, and driver was 50-60 yards short. All these distance issues were confirmed against a GC2. I went through a long process of waiting for the 2.1 app, going to the range, etc - before they would agree to have it sent back. I finally have a new replacement in the mail, arriving today. It better be a lot closer than the last unit!
-
Same issue for me, just got my unit the other day L wedge, sand wedge etc. are off but probably acceptable, farther up the club line the farther off my clubs to the point my driver is easily a good 50 to 60 off. I am not going to throw number out so poeple can scoff at my expected distances but they are way off. I have been golfing for many years and I know my distances.
I really don't know what to expect when it comes to launch angle and spin rate, I never measure that in real life but I do know form playing what to expect on distance.
I am not sure if I should call and send mine back also.Last edited by BogeyMan; 11-27-2015, 01:03 AM.

Dpac, I am getting my dealer to confirm my numbers but why such a d-head? I know it's a training device and I don't claim to be a low handicapper but 20-50 yards short is not difficult to assess and Skytrac was my choice for affordability and accuracy. An opti-shot could have done better than this. Happy Thxgiving!

Thx mhage.....you were helpful.....I do have a fat mat so could be part of the issue. I'm doing a side by side comparison tomorrow as my dealer's wife won't let me come over on Thxgiving day! :-)

Welcome to the club. Can't tell you how many people complaining about yardages being off with skytrak. I'm in slightly better shape in that all wedges and irons are very close to my actual yardages - but all woods short. I'm moving to the pc version with e6 this evening. Hopefully better results.

I guess it's normal that you will only find posts from those that have issues. No need to say anything if the unit works as expected.
Mine has been tested against a Trackman on the range and it's very close on all clubs from driver to 8 iron. From 9i to a 60 deg wedge it's a bit more flaky with VLA, HLA and ball speed, but distances are close just a bit more inconsistent.
-
My yardages are bang on. I hit a good drive 225 carry with 245-255 roll out, that's a good drive.
Avg. is 215 carry and 230 rollout. I'm a 6 handicap with 120 rounds this year. So I can accurately gauge my distances. For me it's bang on.

Hit some more balls this evening after not being able to the past three days. Still a solid 15 yards short on short irons and felt it was off on my Hybrid as well by about 10 (didn't hit driver or 3-wood). I was out on the course last week for the last time in the foreseeable future because of our weather and once again saw real life distances that were much different than what I am seeing on SkyTrak. I was told last week on the phone by tech support that a new update was coming out this week that should solve the problem. However, I've also seen on here that the new update won't do much for short irons as it is more geared toward driver distances. The week is now coming closer to an end and still no update from SkyTrak.Last edited by golfmatt1773; 11-27-2015, 06:01 AM.

I had more time today to play with my new Skytrak, and here is my observation this far. Distances are so far off it cannot even be considered in the relm of my misperception. For example my general 8 iron carry distance could be considered 150 to160 depending on how hard I swing. Best this thing will calculate if I hit it as hard and flush as I can is 130'ish at best. What is even more bizzare I can grab my 4 iron out swing the same and guess what distance is the same as my 8 iron, sorry no way. My driver distance average carry for me in real world is more than 250, I literally swing out of my shoes on Skytrak and I think the longest total driver shot I have ever been able to muster was 219. Wedges are off also but the margin of error on the surface probably does not seem as bad but as a percentage of calculated distance probably it is as bad. I have made my mind up and come Monday Skytrak is getting a call, I paid way too much money for this toy to accept this kind of poor product. I have been patiently waiting a year for this thing (PC Version) and my patience is flat worn out.Last edited by BogeyMan; 11-27-2015, 09:58 PM.

Sounds like a defective unit to me

Never got e6 to work but distances in St practice mode using PC v2.1 were definitely better than iPad based. No idea why that would be.Originally posted by Mario mwndonca View PostWelcome to the club. Can't tell you how many people complaining about yardages being off with skytrak.
