  • Temperature affect skytrak

I haven't had any problems with my skytrak performance, but yesterday I hit for awhile and it was cooler in my room where I hit. Around 45* and I was noticing 8-10 mph lower ball speeds than usual on it with driver. Can cooler temps affect the camera performance?

No but it certainly can effect ball performance. Playing a cold ball is similar to playing in colder conditions, similar to playing outside in colder conditions.

I keep one in my pocket as I play, or lay it under my heater in my garage and swap them out every so often. I've noticed a difference.

Here's a blurb explaining it: Ball Temperature

Generally, a warmer golf ball travels farther. The rubber materials used to make golf balls respond better if they are more resilient. Warmth enhances resiliency. A warmer ball will come off the clubface with more velocity and spin than a colder ball, encouraging loft. The ball's temperature also has an effect on bounce. Heat gives the ball more elasticity, creating a ball that bounces more and travels longer.

I guess that temperature affects our body, also. Colder temperature will slow down your body movement. Do jump ropes to heat your body and stretch your body, then hit balls. You will see the difference.

I play plenty of cold weather golf and know what to expect. Body temp was fine as I had been inside and went thru a stretching routine before hitting and balls were in the house also. I was just asking if cooler weather would affect the electronics in the unit. I know cold tv's are kinda laggy till they warm up and I doubt skytrak produces much internal heat like a tv would. I cranked the heat up in my room and went back out an hour later when room temp was 70-75 degrees and ball speeds were right back to my normal range. I also play nothing but competitive tournament golf so I know how to loosen up and stretch before playing or practicing. I never just grab and club and start swinging.

Simple test: get in a warm room, then hit a few balls from the room, and then a few balls from the refrigerator or outside. That will tell you if the balls are the culprit or the electronics. Conversely, hit in a cold room with cold and warm balls to see what happens.

The balls were already at room temp. I was just asking if the cameras could be affected by cooler temps. And you wouldn't lose 10mph of ball speed from a ball being 45 degrees rather than 75 degrees.

Not sure where to put this but I received my skytrak unit and the charging keeps shutting down at 69% .. Is this actual or is the app not giving the proper % ?

yes, they are probably wrong. Also, if you get the latest software for pc on their website, pretty sure they got rid of the value and just put a graphic for charge status

Yes it does show wrong. The 2.1 has no value anymore for that reason. Don't worry about it. When it stops charging I most likely at 100%.

Old thread but I have this question also. Keith seems to have confirmed his own suspicions but can anyone else also confirm this? I ask because my garage, where i used the Skytrak is often around 30-40 degrees and I get some odd ball speeds.

In session settings you can set the temp, humidity and altitude to what you are hitting in, and your results should be a bit more accurate, except for the "cold ball" factor.

I meant does the unit physically behave poorly after a certain temperature.

I guess to help clarify what I am seeing I should explain what I am experiencing. Yesterday I had the garage heated to about 50 degrees F, and I showed ball speeds between 165 and 175 mph. Today my body felt just as good and limber, swings felt better and faster and I was making great contact but struggling to get anything over 160 in a garage hovering around 35 degrees F. Cycled golf balls from my pocket to avoid that issue. Checked them for cracks like I usually do etc. Its just strange is all and I want to rule this out via other's experiences.
