  • Excessive spin numbers

I get a few random high spin shots each night. An example is 11k for an 8 iron. It isn't often but it fits happen every now and then. Anyone know the cause? Oh yeah and it is always the shot I stripe...lol

I get spin rates of 10-11K sometimes with my driver, though not often. When it does happen, other data seemed messed up as well. I've even gotten higher than normal ball speed but very short distances. I don't know for sure, but I've wondered if this is more likely to occur when the cameras are struggling to get a good read on the ball. I seem to be more likely to get these really high spin numbers when I use a Callaway ball that has a curved logo on it than with a ball that has a straight logo, even though I always align the ball with the logo facing the camera. It also seems that the ST has a bit higher rate of weird readings when I try to position the alignment line on a ball (rather than the bigger logo) if the ball has a more subtle line compared to a longer or darker line. I also wonder if it is better to position the logo or alignment line horizontally rather than vertically, although I don't know why that should matter. Weird readings are most likely when I forget to position some type of ball marking toward the camera.

Yes, I get a similar read on my mid irons. (I don't hit drivers in my basement.) I feel like that it has something to do with ball's cleanness. Usually I hit with a batch of balls and as they get worn out this erratic spin rate occurs. So when it happens I just pick the ball and throw it away, then I don't get it for a while.

That could definitely be the case for ball wear. This doesn't happen often, but I was curious. I will pull out a new sleeve.

I get very high spin numbers every once in a while also with mid irons. They come almost exclusively from balls that are struck thin, center on the club face. Not low enough to be a sculled ball but I can def tell it's low on the club face. The launch angle ends up being the same or very close to a normal shot, but once the ball gets going it just climbs, lands about 25yds short of expected, then spins back a few yrds.

From my experience on coarse these types of shots usually have a flat ball flight, fly about the same or longer to a well struck shot, land with a long first bounce, then check up or even spin back right after the second bounce.

Skytrak shows these shots look like the flight of a ball going straight into a 30+mph wind.

I tend to crack the covers on balls after a few rounds of play so I am always cycling out new ones. I have tried a few different brands same thing. After a few days of practise the covers split. In real life I don't have this issue because I lose the ball with wild arant shots long before I wear it out

If it's one every so often, then that's probably a mis-mark. You can cut down on mis-marks by using fresh balls and also making sure some kind of black mark (a line or ball logo) is facing the SkyTrak. Also could be something else in the image (white club head, hosel, etc.), in which case you could move your tee position back a tad (to the right of red dot/away from net)

What about just a block dot, would that work as well? Just thinking that a smaller marking may not rub off onto the screen. I know i use both vertical and horizontal logo and they both seem to work fine as far as i can tell.

It "can" matter, but typically no. Here's where it can get you...let's say you put a stripe vertical and slice the crap out of it. It's possible to completely spin that line out of the picture. What I usually tell people is that if you having trouble getting it to register one way, just try the other way and it should work.

SkyTrak_Seth what about those silver stickers you can buy for trackman? Would that help if you placed silver stickers all over the ball?

I'll respond to the above comments here, as I have a hard time keeping track of comments.

Vertical works better for some, horizontal works better for others. To put it simply, if you are having a hard time picking up spin, try it the other way and it will work.

I would think a black dot would work fine. I haven't tried it, though I usually just use the logo.

Finally, I'm not a fan of putting anything on the golf ball when you are trying to measure how it is performing.
