Skytrak owner for 2 months - A couple of questions

HI all, I have been reading this forum since I started looking at getting a Skytrak. There is a lot of great info and advice here, which has been really helpful. I purchased my skytrak just under two months ago, and wanted to ask for some help with a couple of questions I have.

My setup - Running Skytrak on iPad Air 2, with output to projector (Epson 720P unit), hitting into screen (MInibay from all sports systems) and using elite CC 4x5 mat. I have the unit positioned on a piece of board to the side of the mat, with the protective case. Setup is working great, other than wishing I had a little more room due to space constraints.

I really like the unit, however there are a few things that are bothering me that I was hoping to get advice on.

First, I am having a serious issue with driver/wood distances (more than the 4% correction would allow for). My typical drive on the course is between 260-270, up to mid 280s if I get into one (unaided by wind/elevation). When I first started using the range, my best drives were only going 215 yards. I saw similar low numbers from my fairway woods as well, with my 3w barely cracking 200. I tried teeing behind the dot, and that helped some, pushing the driver to the 230s. Lastly, I raised the height of the unit and that got me into the 250s, which is about what I would expect without the 4% correction. The only issue with raising the height is now the unit will not read my iron shots, and misses some woods as well (playing them from the red dot). Iron distances seem to be fairly consistent with what I would expect. Is there a way I can position the ball to read all shots at the higher unit height?

Second, the issue with driver distance carries over to the WGT app, and even worse than the Skytrak app as I can't get a driver past 210 yards. It also has the same issues with woods, as I can't get a 3W past 200 yards. Is there any way to fix the WGT app, as it stands it is almost unplayable except in challenge mode.

Lastly - I get the occasional wifi dropout, but more often the unit just freezes in that it doesn't recognize any swings. the light is on, I hit a shot, and nothing. Usually I have to power cycle the unit and the app (ending any session I was playing), and half the time do a hard reset on the unit. Not sure why this would happen, and if I should send my unit back for repair, or if there is anything I can do to assist it (update units firmware, etc.)

TL/DR version -

1) Is there a way to position ball for other shots to accommodate raising unit so it reads driver distance correctly (need to have unit ~1.5" above surface to get accurate driver readings, otherwise driver reads 25% low) I don't want to have to keep moving constantly...
2) Is there a way to adjust distances in WGT app? Even making adjustments in #1, driver still reads ridiculously low (like 210). Irons seem to be fairly accurate.
3) Has anyone else experienced issues with the unit freezing and needing to be reset constantly?

CASoxFan, I have similar issues w driver distances as your issues 1 and 2. Btw, do you tee up your ball quite high?

Also for some of the more knowledgable forum members (including SkyTrak_Seth / Seth), like to know if raising ST unit will really help w accuracy of driver or teed-up shots? If so maybe shed some light on why and how? Thanks.

I would say I tee it on the high side, yes, but not crazy (I use a 3 1/4" tee and probably have 3/4-1" in the ground/mat)

I don't have ceiling height to hit driver but i do get up to 240 yds out of my hybrid off the deck. Ball speed ranges from 135 to 145 usually.
What ball speeds are you getting and trajectory?

That yardage is reduced in wgt because most of the courses don't give me any roll. I'll get the similar yardages as the range if I'm playing St. Andrews.
My unit hasn't froze.
I have hit 3wood and got ball speeds over 150 but it doesn't always give me more yardage than the hybrid due to carry. The farthest I've hit it is 250. On the course i can get it out there further but a good hybrid on the course travels 240 and I've seen it there on the skytrak range. I question the wood yardage also. My iron and wedge play is spot on.

Same here as @cos - low ceiling so my 40" 16* Hybrid is the longest club I can swing. I get ball speed of 135-139 consistently out of it and carry (depending on Launch angle) of around 220. I still think it favors draws over cuts too much though. As 100-200 side spin draw out carries a fade.
I get 120-125 ball speed from my 3i and it carries around 210.

Just looked at the data and ball speed was around 145, angle at 15 and rpm around 2400. I wonder how accurate it is however if it isn't measuring correctly...

With those numbers you should be around 245 - 255 carry, maybe 260

a perfectly straight shot with those numbers carrys 239.7 yards on flightscopes trajectory optimizer.

I agree, and with that carry that puts me 260-270 total where I would expect...yet am only getting mid 230s total.

With those numbers in FTO, it's 240 carry at 1000ft and no side spin and 0 hla.

Angle at 15 as stated above, side spin between generally between 0 and 450 (slight draw)

Weel, tonight was a total bust. Was using the unit for about 90 minutes and experienced at least 6 times where I had to power cycle the unit because it was not responding (all lights green with red dot but no response to hit shot), and a few wi-fi dropouts. I did 2 hard resets, and still had issues. I will be contacting Sky tomorrow but this is ridiculous.

This happens to me as well. Easy fix for me is to hit 'replay'. Replays the shot and then everything fine. Works every time.

not sure what ST will be able to do about E6 demo issues.

I hadn't tried the replay function, but quite frankly it should work without having to do that. This isn't a $20 piece of electronics. I called ST and they are having me send the unit in, so I will be without it for a couple of weeks. Will update when I get more info.

I am a new user too - got mine on December 22. Same problem as you, only with all clubs. Can't get driver past 215 when hit 250-270 outdoors. Also averaged 258 over 30 drives on GC2 this past weekend to try and make sure problem was not me. Have tried everything (placement, height, tilt, software, multiple computers iPad and PCs, friends testing as well) to fix with no luck.

I have phoned tech support a few times and have sent in logs of my sessions with different clubs. Every time I seem to get a different message.

First I was told that their software guy Howard would contact me, but did not hear back. Now today in talking with sky golf they want me to send unit in as well but the fellow who left message alerting me also stated that they have tested other units of users with same problem and the units were fine. So I am not confident about what will be done if their mind is made up that the unit is fine.

I really want this unit to work but a refund and used GC2 may have to be in my future. Tired of having to hit driver then three wood to hit a green on a 410 yard hole when outdoors it is driver 9 iron.

Do you have access to a rangefinder and outdoor range. If so, i would go there first, laser something then see if the unit is off. This should tell you fairly quickly whether or not there is something wrong with skytrak itself, or if you have an issue with your indoor setup, swing, etc. Some have a had a bad unit and others are finding out it's really accurate and they swing differently inside or have the unit on the hitting mat and it's moving around.

I played wgt last night and many of my 16* hybrid were barely getting past 200yds. If i hit 3wood it doesn't always travel further so it's not worth hitting because my dispersion is worse with it. ?????? Yet i can jump on a 5 iron and get out there too and 4 iron is slightly longer than 5 iron slightly. 3 iron not so much.

When you get similar distance with several clubs, how do the measured ball parameters differ - if they differ at all? Are ball speed, backspin, and launch angle similar or is there a typical data profile for each different type of club?

So I figured I would give it one more go last night before I sent it back. Still had a few lock ups, the replay trick worked a couple of times, but a few times I had to power cycle. Also had a new one while playing WGT. A few times, mainly with woods, I would hit a shot and it would go hard left at like a 60 degree angle from where I am aiming (a shot that would be almost physically impossible unless you aimed that way). It would keep happening until I switched to an iron and just basically hit a half punch to get it advanced. Not sure if it is related or not, but I sent out the unit this morning. Will update further upon return.

Wgt hard left - very common. It's not really a sim. Don't bother. e6 demo is ok. By next week we should have TGC or pg. Actually I have no idea if that's true. Just hoping.

Ya, it's frustrating. It seems obviously that the defective buyers are vocal, but for a product that's not calling itself BETA, there seems to be alot of defective units. Way more than I've ever heard of from GC2, Optishot, P3Pro, Trackman, Flightscope, ect. Ya, some are entry level, but still this is an alarming high rate or rejects.

I hope you don't have any issues and either get a new unit or your money back. Good luck.
