Excessive back spin rates...

I'm getting back spin rates in the 9k, sometime 10k with my 7 iron, and seeing large losses of distance. Anyone seeing the same?

no. Are you using new, clean balls with the stamped logo facing the unit? I've fount this to pretty much always give good results.

I see a similar excessive back spin rates. Probably one out of 20 hits using the same ball. I couldn't figure out the exact cause.

Is it even possible to hit a 7 iron with 10k backspin? By hammering straight down on the ball toward the back of my stance? Which i'm not doing...

Nothing is impossible for guys with extremely high swing speed. With 7 iron loft, it would still be very difficult for them, I guess.

But, for amateurs like us, it is impossible. If anyone could prove me wrong, I would be very surprised.

I can get a pull-slice 7 iron to spin 8500-9000, fwiw.

Every once in a while, I get a really high spin rate, usually with a driver or hybrid. In fact, I have recorded spin rates of over 10,000 rpm with my driver, even though it typically produces a spin rate around 2,000 rpm. I think these rare events must be considered as misreads. As others have recommended, it is important to use a clean ball with a clear logo aimed toward the ST unit to reduce misreads. I haven't tested this out scientifically, but I haven't noticed any misreads of this type when using the Callaway Truvis Chrome Soft red-and-white ball, so maybe the ball markings provide areas of greater contrast to help the ST camera obtain accurate readings.

Along with the outside condition of the ball, make sure you are using balls that have not been hit 1000's+ times. What I have found is I can actually tell if a ball is starting to break down with Skytrak. I will use the same 2 or 3 balls with my sky track for weeks/months, then even though the ball looks OK on the out side the spin rates will go up 2-3K. If I grab a new ball, the spin rate will come down, and I will pick up 2-3mph of ball speed. If I keep hitting balls that have increased in spin rate they will end up cracking shortly after.

What kind of ball are you using? I can't get more than a week out of mine without cracking. I'm using callaway supersoft and maxfli softfli. I think these tend to crack a lot easier. I've used prov1's and they seem to last a long time but i do notice they don't fly as far as the others.

I've cracked 2 of the Wilson Duo Spin, but not any of the Callaway Chrome Soft, which is what I usually use.

In terms of the excess spin issues, I finally saw a major driver spin misread (11,700 rpm) with a Truvis Chrome Soft that's getting pretty worn, so the exaggerated markings on the Truvis are not automatic protection against major misreads.
