  • Tgc bunker play and short pitches

This has been discussed regarding the spin issue (always 1000rpm) on tgc but I wondered how many of you are finding shots like short chips and pitches to be tolerable (or hopefully better). I have held off on getting tgc partly because of needing a good computer to run the software but also because as a skytrak user I have not been convinced the device can adequately handle the different short shots a normal sim round requires (I am not counting putting as no sim has putting done well from what I have tried when compared to real life). So my question for tgc skytrak people is how has playing in tournaments and otherwise been with sand shots/pitches. I have considered this such a problem that I have continued to look into the gc2 route...I consider this the major difference between the two at this point that doesn't seem to be talked about often. I tables this for awhile as it has been nice with spring and summer soon. Very interested to know again though as there have been several upgrades etc. thanks in advance

Since the 3.0 update I have no problem hitting the shots I want around the greens. I like to hit high pitches with lots of spin.

I have zero problems with short chips or sand shots and I find it to be very accurate for both

I've also been able to hit chips as short as 7 yards. I have the short game turned OFF. I realized that if you want to turn it on during the round all you have to do is select putter. I haven't needed to turn it on though as I haven't had any problems with short shots registering.

Since the last update I have had a couple of issues:

            1) Hitting my 54 and 58 degree wedges for short chips (less than 10 yards) sometimes results in TGC showing the ball going 15-20 degrees to the right. I am not mis-hitting the shots, they hit center of my screen, but the game shows them shooting off to the right. This happens on about 25% of my short chips, and so far only occurs with my 54 and 58 degree wedges. My 50 degree gap wedge is that I use for most of my short chips, and I have never seen this happen with the gap wedge.

            2) I am getting about a 25% no-read rate on short chips and about 10% on putts. Red laser light just doesnt turn off, like the shot was never seen by skytrak. This is much worse than I have seen in the past.

I am going to disable "Short Chip Correction" next time I play to see if that helps with these issues.

Does your 54* and 58* have any white near the club head? Like an old for-sale sticker?

Are they all the same model club?

No stickers or anything white. They are both Titleist Vokey SM6 wedges (chrome finish), and they are brand new. I previously had black cleveland wedges and never had an issue with them going to the right in TGC.

I just played another round at Muirfield, and had several short chips and putts that did not read after 5-10 attempts. This was with "Short Chip Correction" turned off. I did not have any issues with chips going 20 degrees right, but still had all the no-reads. I will probably just turn ShortChipCorrection back on and hope for improvements in the next update.

Right now my solution is to try a chip 3-5 times...if it still doesnt read, I use the next higher lofted club (thinking that I can hit the ball a little harder and maybe the cameras are better at picking up shots with higher ball speed).

I'm having the same issue with the launch being off. It's most noticeable with my chipping, my driver and three wood. I've noticed it on my irons, but not as much. I used to use me M2 that has white, so I switched it to an older Calaway with no white. None of my other clubs have white. It's frustrating. I've aligned it 100 times and made sure I was aligned as well. Same thing, I'll hit center or even right and the ball will go left.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones in that I haven't had any real issues with chipping as far as reads go. What bothers me is a lack of consistency of what results I end up with, especially out of the bunkers. Sometimes the bunkers seem to be heavily penalizing and then other times I hit what I think should be a quality shot and it runs by the 15-20 feet. And I will get that in the "rough" sometimes as well. Outside of that I don't have any issues with any chips or pitches.

I completely agree with this. Especially the penalty for hitting out of a green side bunker, as described in the TGC Penalty System Explained thread, does not seem to be consistent or match what is stated in that thread.

No problems hitting short chips less than 7 yards and they even stop short. I don't have the issue of no reads either. Agree with the comment above though on some inconsistency with sand shots sometimes.

heres the thing, simulation is never going to be comparable to real life, slope, lie, sand, balls going thru thick trees etc ,u cannot recreate in a room, so why go over board just for slightly more accuracy? skytrak is good enough for simulation play in my view, even the delay on gc2 is half a second , whats the point unless you can have the illusion of the ball going straight into the course with absolute no delay.

Jason. Not really what I was going for here. My issue with the range app and skytrak is short chips/anything with a launch angle over about 38 degrees and low ball speed is not picked up well or consistently. Some have this problem despite moving the ball forward or backward around the laser. I wanted people to comment on tgc with skytrak because without shorter shots wgt is "good enough"(putting as I said doesn't matter as nothing accurately fixes that). My hope is that the updates have improved this especially sim. If I miss a green in sim I at least want to duplicate a short chip consistently or I might as well use the range app and save thousands of dollars (not what I want). The slopes Tex are hard to deal with as some people don't want slope to influence and others do. My main issue with the range app at least is getting the skytrak to pick up a shot. I wonder how all tgc users with skytrak are doing with it. My biggest concern is having to rehit shots that aren't picked up. I know it happens in much higher quality sims but want it minimized. So much so the gc2 is still on my mind. The gc2 road is a much bigger investment and I will likely go tgc now since it is transferable if I ever change to gc2. Just don't want to buy the computer and tgc only to have a lot of misses. Doubt I would regret it but the misses are painful to me.

Since the update I haven't had a single miss on a short chip. I just finished round two and three shots of under 10 yards and chipped short on all of them. I don't know what they've done but I find it's fixed the short chipping so you can play with no issues. Also I came up short on 17 I believe and had to hit a shot up a 15' bank had no problem there. I hit everything off the laser dot without issue as well. With where the unit and software stand I wouldn't hesitate one second on getting this over anything else that is available. If you've got the funds you certainly can't go wrong with a gc2.

I have not regretted the SkyTrak/TGC purchase at all. Miss reading chips has not been an issue for me. My no-reads have been on 3-woods due to my low launch of that club, but have moved the ball back and rarely have issues unless I just really hit a poor shot. Every now and then putting is an issue but it is due to the mat I use more than anything and how it was constructed.

Do you have the short chip correction on or off? I ask to make sure because I've been testing this a lot and protee even let me test beta test a few of the updates to the chipping (side note, they really are incredible with their dedication to make everything as prefect as possible, it's amazing to see) and with the chip correction ON you will absolutely get all of your chips (no matter what the length) to read, but it will always be in the 1100 to 1900 range from shorter than 20 yards because it puts you in putting mode.

Now with the chip correction OFF, this will read spin a little more accurately but I have gotten the occasional 400ish spin that shoots across the green on what I thought was a well struck chip as mainstgolf stated, but for the most part is pretty decent.

Now for the very short chips, I have played with this a ton and I am able to get maybe 4 yard CARRY chips to read (3 yard ones if I'm very lucky) but the problem lies with the ones shorter than that, and again, talking about carry here. Played 4 rounds today and again happened multiple times where I am 6-8 yards or so from the hole but in the rough (so putting isn't really the best option) and I only want to carry the ball 6 or 7 feet in front of me and roll out up as you would do in real life and I am never able to get it to read. Then end up hitting it harder to get it to read and then annoyed I had to do that, then end up switching back to chip correction ON and play with that from then on.

If anyone is able to get 6 or 7 FOOT carry shots to read constantly or at all really in OFF mode I would love to see a video of it showing them in OFF mode and then constantly getting these shots to read. I mean even protee and skytrak said it was a skytrak limitation that they are working hard to fix right now.

Sure these short shots don't come up a crazy amount, but it is definitely enough for my dad and I to get frustrated and he ends up telling me to turn it back to the other mode (meaning ON mode) to get it working seamlessly again.

And in my talks with protee, they also had a great idea to possible make it so the game goes into putting mode at 10 yards and in instead of 20 and in. I think this would be a perfect fix to get the best of both worlds until skytrak updates their abilities to read those tiny shots in normal mode. Maybe if they made it so it could be turned on and off like it is now, that would appease everyone

You all know i love a good chipping in tgc discussion and couldn't stay out of this one, just got back from vacation and was licking my chops to get in on this one haha

I must be in the ON correction as i usually see the spin in that range. For me, this seems to work quite well from the rough when close to the pin. Im 99.9% certain that i've carried shots in the 6-7' range. They will even come up short. From what i remember, I had a 4yd shot on some course and came up short on a chip. If i get time this week, i will try to replicate it and get some type of video if possible.

I've been able to get 6 yard carry in OFF mode. I'm pretty sure I did it in that round I posted on YouTube today. Let me see if I can find the time.

I think this must be round two since i see my ghost at +6. I know i had one or two chips that may have carried the 6-7 feet range. I wonder if i can find it in this video.

I think i found one. At the 19:08 mark, you can see i hit a wonderful chip all the way across the green that ended up in the rough on the other side and was 5yds from the pin. You can see the reading through the shot analysis screen. At about 19:58 I chipped again and came up around 6-7' from the hole. It's kind of weird, but it goes from 7' to 514yds, so I assume i got it within the 6' range.

At 39:25 i hit one to 9yds and then chipped at about 39:53 to about 5' short.

I watched and it looks like you probably have about 10ft to the screen I'm guessing and you hit a little bit up on the screen, so I'm gonna guess you carried it about 4-5 yards-ish I'd say. I've also been able to get them to read a bit as well in OFF mode. What I'm talking about is carrying that shot only about half or 2/3rds ( 5-7 FEET) of the way to your screen and land it there and see if it reads, that's where the problem is with the no reads in OFF mode and can get super frustrating when you know the little bump shot you want to play but can't.

And ps, did watch the round when you posted it earlier as well, great playing and awesome set up!
