  • New and planning. Need a little advice re: temporary net/setup

I'm about to take the plunge. I've done some research on the forums here and elsewhere and I'm planning to set up a temporary station in my garage, and then when we build our addition next year, have a permanent station built. Until then I need a set up that allows for a quick set up and a quick tear down and store.

With that in mind, I'm getting the Alienware 17 R3 to be devoted completely to running the simulation programs. I think I'm leaning towards a projector and stand to use as well (at first I thought I'd just go with a net and wait for the projector). Can I display the image on my white garage door with a net in front of it? Or should I get a standard white impact panel that I can tie/untie when I want to use and when I want to store it?

For those of you with nets, I'm intrigued by the Net returner (particularly with a 5 minute one push button feature), but I'm a little turned off by the price tag. Is it worth it? Is there anything else that will work just as well?

    Thanks!

    Joe

Yes get a projector and impact screen.

Get the biggest, widest screen you can fit in your space.

If 8 feet wide is your limit, then the NetReturn is a decent option. I use netreturn in my garage setup.

All Sport Systems also has good systems: http://www.allsportsystems.com/golf-simulator-setup.php

And Par 2 Pro has DIY setups and also can custom build enclosures to fit your space.

I think the more permanent set ups will work in my addition. I'm looking to get something useable for the near term. Would it make sense to pick up an impact screen say on Ebay for quick hang/take down?

I have a Net Return. Its very easy to assemble and disassemble with the push button design. After you do it a few times, you should be able to get it done in under five minutes. If I were to fabricate my own frame (i.e. PVC, 80/20), I don't think the fastening method I would have to use would be efficient and it would just be an annoying chore everytime I wanted to play. So, in my opinion, its worth its pricey cost in time savings. That's assuming you need some sort of frame, but if you have a means of hanging something efficiently and securely, then I'd go that direction instead.

The Net Return does sell a screen accessory, which is of course pricey. I think you could hang your own white screen pretty easily on it though. You'll probably need additional weights or sandbags on the back/bottom frame to keep it from being too top heavy.

If you have the ability to hang a steel cable in the garage, you can hang the net and the screen from it and just slide it out of the way when not needed.

How easy is it to fold down and then store?

It's even quicker to disassemble since you're not searching for the correct tubes to connect sequentially. The time consuming task is wrapping up the net in a neat manner. It all stores in a duffel bag that is approximately 4 feet long by 1 foot in diameter. For what you pay for, it looks good both indoors and outdoors, , and its very mobile. If those are additional potential applications, then I think its a good value.

Having said that, in my opinion, if you're going to be in a constant spot short term and want something easily stowed, I would second the suggestion by Wbond with the steel cable.

See attached image of my temporary setup. Sounds like I'm in the same boat as you. I wanted something that was quick and easy to setup/tear down until we build our new house and I can have a dedicated room.

This is SPDR net by rukkett sports. Takes just a minute to set it up and take it down, but I realized I can just push it all the way against the wall when I'm done with it rather than taking it down. Saves a few minutes on setting everything up. then the 6x10 mat I just roll up right in front of the net when finished, and the TV stand just rolls to the other side of the garage.

I'm leaning on getting a projector as well, as I am used to it with my coach's foresight system. I'm not opposed to waiting until my dedicated place is built next spring. Is the lack of a projector in your set up a draw back? Otherwise I think this very set up might be very similar for me.

I wanted a projector as well at first, but honestly I don't mind not having one at all. We actually push the TV cart outside on the back deck when we are hanging out and grilling since it has direct tv on it, so the tv has multiple uses.

I think it would be cool to have a projector and impact screen in a temp setup, but I would take a long hard look at it before you pull the trigger. That setup might not be so temporary and easy to setup/take down. If I could have figured out a way to have a wireless projector with wireless hdmi, and the projector just sits on the ground in front of the screen I may have done that for this current setup.

Also this is just my personal opinion, but I found that the longer it takes to set everything up, the less likely you are to use it more often.

I can't agree more with the last point by driver... Keep setup/breakdown as easy as possible! Keeping it simple will be worth whatever extra money or effort you need to commit up front. If it's not simple, you'll use it less than you think.

I bought the Net Return Home Series from Dick's (it was $100 less than buying directly and it had free shipping as well as a 10% off coupon). I already have a mat so I just needed the net for my Skytrak.
