  • Real Golf Balls v. Calloway HX foam Practice Balls

    Hi All,

When I was researching the Skytrak one of my concerns was whether I could use foam practice balls accurately with it. I found a couple of comments here or there that said it seemed to work ok, but no stats or definitive results. I want this capability so that I don't have to worry about my kids or wife shanking a ball into the Skytrak as they learn the game. I did a brief test today and thought I would share my results as I have seen others curious about this topic.

    Test Parameters:
    1) I am setup using the skytrak in my garage with plenty of room to swing.
    2) Session set to 500 ft elevation, 85* and 90% humidity - realistic for today where I live.
    3) I used my 3 Hybrid to get a sense of accuracy on longer distance shots - I can hit this about 240 yards on the course, but usually hit it 210-225.
    4) I was hitting bare foot because I can now that I don't have to go in public to hit.
    5) Even balls are the real ones - Calloway HX Diablo Tour (White).
    6) Odd balls are the foam ones - Calloway HX foam Practice Balls (Orange).

    Results from the chart attached:
    1) Ball speed appears to be consistent between the two balls when club speed is close (shots 5/6; 8/9)
    2) I got slightly higher launch angles with the foam balls
    3) Back spin seemed to be reasonable and fairly consistent
    3) I seemed to be getting opposite side spin between the two balls, but I think this was me being inconsistent with my swing (compensating for the previous shot)
    4) I am happy with the distances as they are mostly in the range I hit this club. Maybe gave up a little distance without shoes??

Overall I thought that the results were close enough to feel comfortable using the foam balls to practice with the Skytrak, but I need to do a more thorough test throughout the range of clubs and with shoes on. I hope that others find this helpful and appreciate further contributions and thoughts.

I would be interested in a comparison using the Qolf balls that have been mentioned before. Does anyone have that?

      >>> 1) Ball speed appears to be consistent between the two balls when club speed is close (shots 5/6; 8/9)

That's because the Skytrak doesn't measure club speed so it is calculated from the ball speed.

As for balls, there are limited flight ones that are hard so they give a better feel than foam balls. So those might be an option to consider.

Personally I'd build a good protective case. With kids and visitors you risk getting a club into it as well as a ball.

I thought I had read that it wouldn't track club data before I bought it, but then the stat came up with my session history so I figured I was wrong. Good to know that all the stats are derived from the ball movement.

I have attached some tests with a 5 iron in this post.

      TM Penta - 174 average
      Qolf - 179 average
      Almost Golf - 149 average
      Callaway Foam - 162 average

Here is some data for a driver and SW. I only tested the TM Penta and SW for these.

SW TM Penta - 89 avg
SW Qolf - 96 (notice the extremely low spin compared to the TM Penta)
Driver TM Penta - 249 avg
        Driver Qolf - 253 avg

Great thread - thanks for posting all the results. Foam balls are a constraint for me - holding me back from making a purchase. So its nice to see how they compare and which seem to perform the best.

Ideally it it would be nice to be able to "tweak" Skytrak to adjust for different ball types (e.g. Ball profile setting). Although Skytrak may not be able to endorse certain balls, this forum would be a great place to share parameters for different ball types. Seems like elevation would help adjust ball speed/distance, but not sure if there is a way to adjust the amount of spin...

Great job guys with this, so with a protee system there are options that you could adjust for the compensation if i am correct between a Qolf ball and a real golf ball that are not yet available with other simulators this would help the longevity of the screen. I am wondering if anyone has pursued this option and how has it worked for them I would love to keep an impact screen for three years instead of one, So one question pertaining to the option on different ball that are not considered real what was the most realistic to use in your opinion.

Golf ball feel was one of the reasons I purchased the Qolf balls. The foam ball and the Almost Golf ball don't feel anything like a real golf ball. The Qolf is closer to a real ball since it is made of hard plastic. One thing I notice with the Qolf balls is there is more bounce back off the impact screen. If you are concerned about damage from an errant shot, the Qolf ball may not be the best ball since it is so hard.

not damage as i am fully enclosed just wondering if it would help the time of life to the impact screen and if its worth the switch

Put a net behind your screen. This will help out.

Would you guys say a wolf ball is too hard to use indoors on something like a net return pro? I'm scared of damaging the walls in my living room.
