  • TGC on computer from long range

I think I have the wife convinced on TGC with their current rebate, but I need some ideas... I already have a solid gaming PC which I would really like to leave my computer where it is, safe and sound and clean in my house, rather than moving it back and forth to my garage where I will be playing.

Ideally I would run a long 50' or 75' HDMI cable out to a TV in the garage, I just hope the signal wouldn't degrade a ton with that much of a run.

Also, the problem with controlling the computer... I saw someone's post about using a stream controller rather than keyboard/mouse, is that what most people do? I really doubt if a steam controller signal would reach 50' through walls, though, so please throw your 2 cents in and let me know of any ideas/tools that I'm not realizing would make this whole situation work.

I know I'm being optimistic, I'm just hoping you guys can point me towards some ideas that I don't know about.

You can find HDMI cables with built in amplifiers so that part you should be okay with. Run them over 100' and you will have troubles. On the remote If you have an IPad I would check out the air keyboard setup. I use it and love it.

I have this exact set up with the computer in the basement and ran a couple 50ft hdmi and usb cords with an extender in the middle for each to connect the two 50ft sections (ran them through a pvc pipe to the garage). Found this to be the best route. Tried to buy a few 100ft hdmi and literally 3 in a row didn't work, so said screw that and the 50fts with few extender have been working perfectly.

For controlling the computer, run the long usb out to the garage from your computer inside the house. Then at the end thats inside the garage, get a 4 way usb splitter (pretty cheap on Amazon). And then you can connect your keyboard, mouse, etc. to that.

Next, if you want to, buy a cheap monitor/tv that you can use put in the garage if you don't have one lying around already, and split the hdmi cord you ran out there to the monitor and the other to the projector and you are good to go for picture on each. Working like a charm for me.

Ive gone even more so since with running another set of long hdmi cords to a cable box in the basement and controlling it by the cell phone app via Wi-Fi and now I have the full dream of golf and tv in the detached garage haha.

For those who just can't get the HDMI to work over the desired distance. You can get HDMI to cat6 converters for pretty cheap. Do your research before buying. By going this route you should be able to go hundreds of feet.

Steam link is what I use. It's a 50 dollar box that you can just leave out in the garage to stream your main PC to.

I use a usb extension as well with a 50' hdmi cable to the projector and a 25' dvi to monitor.

Thanks a bunch for these ideas guys. I wouldn't have even thought/known about some of these possibilities. I'm sort of leaning towards the 75' HDMI cable and doing the Air Keyboard app on iPad.

If the app falls through or I would just rather have keyboard and mouse, are you guys using something like this? (I'm not finding much on Amazon with great reviews)

The Steam Link sounds cool, but it's the same price for a long HDMI cable and I'd be running an Ethernet cable anyway... I just like that the HDMI cable wouldn't be contingent on my network and it has really good reviews on Amazon for $40.

              Thanks again for the ideas!

I love the air keyboard. Mike80 made a great TGC remote for it that is perfect!
            Working...
