  • Skytrak after warranty service experience questions

Found out how easy it is to bust a skytrak with a toe shot to the lens. Didn't crack anything, but made the unit tip over. After that, no laser, no reads.

Resets did not help. I have an rma from sky golf. Woman said 7 days to check it out and get me a repair cost. She could not give me a range of typical issues and costs.

Has anyone had any experience with sky service? Costs...etc?

    Thanks

Can't answer that question, but after several strikes which took chunks out of the brittle hard plastic "protective" case, I have pretty much given up on using real golf balls with the unit, and now use Almost Golf balls only. The unit is a great tool, but the nature of where it has to be positioned makes it patently vulnerable, and the absence of meaningful impact protection in its construction or as an accessory has resulted in users designing and building their own protective housings, or sourcing them from Japan. This deficiency is probably costing some sales, especially among less accomplished golfers who might want to purchase the unit to help them improve, but has not so far spurred any response from ST.

SomaPLR - not talking about a notebook, iPad or television here. This is a device designed to measure golf ball flight in such a way that it has to be placed 12 inches from where a golf club at great speed is launching balls at even greater speed. Are you suggesting that the ability to withstand a hit from one of said balls is not even a concern in the design process??

There is no launch monitor on the market designed to withstand a golf ball to the unit, so no. You can not design a product with lenses and photometric capturing to impede the accuracy of the unit and protect the lenses. I'm absolutely suggesting that - they aren't designed to take a golf ball to a lense. That's not the units fault.

So, the design is by definition deficient in its ability to be hit by a golf ball. Plenty of forum users have designed their own cases to mitigate this deficiency - so it's not impossible.. If similar protection was part of the monitor itself, that would be less deficient, right?

I have hit thousands of shots with mine. I've had a lot of friends hit on it too, also let my 4 year old son hit shots and have never seen any come close to hitting it. Closest thing that happened was a friends daughter whiffed a shot and club got near the unit. Have seen a lot of hosel rockets too but never near my skytrak. I'm not really sure how it is possible but I guess it is since people on here are saying they have hit it. I have no protector for my system either. Used to have issues with bounce backs but just added padding in front of my mat and eliminated that problem.

Not off the hosel - off the toe of driver or fairway wood...easy to do.

Easy to do? That's not hitting a shot "off the toe" that's hitting a ball like 75-80* to the right for the toe shank push...

SomaPLR is it this a semantics issue - a shank off the toe? Okay "toe shank push" if you prefer. You hear that clang at the range all the time - It looks exactly like this:

My unit was hit by a ball as well. It can detect a shot but no data is displayed on iPad. After a shot, the app (WGT) is trying to calculate, but no data. Direct mode same issue. Uninstalled and reinstalled app, no help. Trying to drain battery tonight. Get support is pain.

I opened mine up and disconnected the battery - ho help. Cover Slides right off if you remove two screws.

What ever happened or how was it resolved? Same issue except mine unit was NOT hit with a club or ball. My unit is currently in for service.

Have you had any luck with contacting repair, I toed one into my unit and killed it exactly as you described just an hour ago with my 5 hybrid.

EDIT: I got mine to come back to life but it was a bit weird how I think I fixed it !! see my other thread on this. I got very lucky, I had wrote it off and planned for it to have to go in for repair.

Just jumped on board with a SkyTrak August 2015 for my birthday present to myself.

Oh man that sucks. Have you tried a hard reset first? Hopefully there's nothing rattling around inside. Good luck with your repair if needed.

Has anyone had an out-of-warranty unit repaired yet?

Today I tried playing TGC, and had several bad-reads. Short chips and putts going 100 yards, a drive that went 5 yards and appeared to hit a wall! I couldn't finish a hole without a bad read.

I tried the Skytrak range app next, and didnt see any issues but ran out of time to test (only hit about 20 shots, but they all looked ok).

I am not ready to call support yet, will give TGC another try tomorrow. But was curious if anyone has had a unit repaired, what was the cost and timeframe?

        Thanks

Hopefully it just needs some sleep. Haven;t sent my busted unit in yet - got an RMA and a shipping address, it's a third-party place that services phones, iPads and stuff...got less excited about sending it in.

The wifi module broke on mine and it was a couple of weeks out of warranty and they just replaced the unit free of charge.

I think I am ok. Fired up TGC again this morning and after 2 shots it would not read another shot. Red laser stayed on no matter what I tried.

I then tried Skytrak range again, hitting many shots, each one registered with no issues.

I rebooted PC, reset skytrak, started everything back up and TGC started working again. Played 9 holes, every shot registered correctly.

Was a bit worried last night, hopefully it was just sun spots...
