  • Skytrak Armour

Ok, I'm starting this thread to see if protecting the Skytrak box is still a must for some people.

I have read countless posts on this subject and generally feel that this is a need for users. I have owned the Skytrak for a couple of months and agree for the most part. Honestly, it doesn't seem an issue for myself, however I couldn't possibly let my kids, favorite friends, or even a touring pro use it without completely freaking out!!!

My question is this. Is this a need for users that still exists for a reasonable enough amount of people?

I am a manufacturing engineer and have all the available information and software to develop a legit protective case that can make the Skytrak bulletproof. I can integrate leveling devices, locating devices, and alignment aids into the case. Basically whatever a user wants.

I can have these produced at a reasonable cost and shipped to a user. This is what I can do.

I have a desire to this, have started on a prototype for myself, but am really looking for more interest than personal use. Time is a huge motivator for me as I'd rather be hacking away on the TGC. LOL!

If you are interested, please PM me or just reply to this thread so I can get an idea of the need.

Disclaimer: yes I have the Davray sketch and will use some of that information in whatever design I come up with. My plan would be to optimize and improve overall function of whatever case I come up with. I see location, leveling, protection, and consistency of setup being the utmost importance.

  • Gary....Can you advise what color you will be painting the Armor? Did you decide up on Army Green or decide to go with a matte black paint?

      Black oxide coating.

  • At the risk of being ripped off (again), I want to post a graphic of my new window for clarity. I think there has been some misunderstanding as to what I have done here. I've done more than "just cut the jail bars in front of the LED flash". I've redesigned the window to be 100% protective and to not have material in places that can cause bad reads. I've gained a great understanding of what is going on with the camera system that the ST uses. Having reverse engineered the entire ST camera system I'm now fully confident in what I have designed. You will see the ST camera system behind the window in my graphic. This isn't "scanned" in or a rendering. This is me sitting down with calipers, a scale, a lot of time, and some experience to get everything right. Should I have done this from the very beginning? Yes. Did I think it was that critical? No. I was wrong in that thinking. However, I've also been accused of "mulling" over a design for 3 months. Even though I started this thread 11/29/2016. While this has dragged on for longer than I would have liked, I simply want to make it right from the beginning. Have a look at the graphic.

To confirm, we don't need to buy the hardware to screw the SkyTrak into the base, but we do need to purchase the Leveling screws? Please confirm when you have a moment. Also, have you done any testing with your SkyTrak in regards to a Network Wifi connection or are you connecting directly? If you're connecting via Network, can you confirm you're not experiencing wifi signal degradation or interference with the Armor?

Also, i know you've mentioned a few times the Armor is 8 pounds, the base is .375 inches thick and while that is indeed good to know, that doesn't necessarily mean a direct hit by a golf ball won't seriously dent the armor. Can you advise the thickness of the exterior metal which encloses the SkyTrak to the base? I think it's a fair question to ask and i don't believe i've seen an answer when asked previously.

      TIA

All fair questions Jason and when I get a little more time (in the morning) I will answer all of them. In short, don't buy anything.

Jason Barto - I'm supplying all hardware and leveling feet. The leveling feet will be 2" long and I have to be firm on that because I've already bulk ordered those to save guys the hassle. So unless you have a need for longer ones you won't need to buy anything extra.

I haven't had any issues with wifi. Actually after having gone to using wifi, my ST has performed great. I haven't been able to test this because apparently you can't get good free apps for this on iPhone. I'm open for options here. My wifi antenna is literally 4 feet away from ST.

The base of the Armour is .375" and the enclosure is .125". As far as I know, it's over twice the thickness as any other metal protection out there. I believe I've read someone call it a "sherman tank". I'm ok with that.

        All good questions...

    • Hi Gary....do you still have units left to sell from the current batch or what would the delivery time be if I ordered today? Thanks!

Thank you for your purchase ruefy!

    • This will sound like a bit of a humble brag and I understand that. I played a good round of golf (73) in the current TGC tourney on a very difficult golf course. Checking my shot recording you will see a zeroed out HA(direction) on every putt I hit. I'm pretty stoked about that!

Sorry Jason, I don't have you added to the email list. I talked to the manufacturer today and he says 8 - 10 days before completion. Sad facts. I will pick up and ship the same day when they are complete.

        • Is there an update with this armor?

          • Wow, Gary, that looks fantastic. Can't wait for this to get into the hands of the SkyTrak users to see some additional user reviews. It might end up on my Christmas list...

I'm sure it's not the "case" (haha-see what I did there), but the way the bars are laid out on the front, it almost looks like a golf ball could sneak through there into the flash area? Either way, looks great.

Thanks Dan. Nah, a ball won't touch the lens.

          • Gary - just *another* message to say thanks for all your work on this and also opening it up to the community and offering the group buy in. I am sure it has been way more effort than you anticipated but we all appreciate it! I received my tracking number this morning and cannot wait to let my kids start using the Skytrak without being paranoid
