I have been looking at a new TM4 (indoor & outdoor) but have come across a TM4 that I can purchase for considerably less money that has not been used much and was well taken care of. It was purchased in 2017. I don't believe that the software has ever been updated in it. I have read that it cost about $2,000 to update the software but will this capture all the previous updates?

You will need to pay the transfer fee which is $1k and then if you want updated software you pay another $1k for an annual or $2k for 3 years. Software subscription starts from the day you pay and there is no retroactive charge for missed years. Hardware subscription is different.
good luck with the purchase, I know you will love the unit. I have had my indoor outdoor for just over a year now and taking it to the range has been great as well as being able to hit inside when the sheathed does not cooperate. -

Transfer is not mandatory unless you want all invoices to your company name.
i have purchased a second hand TM4 in sept 2020 and went for the 3 years software subscription.
