  • Help please - E6 iOS courses

    Hello,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I have just bought a Skytrak which I am using outside, out of WiFi range with an iPad.

I am keen for some sim play, so wanted to check I am right on saying this will need to be with E6 - are there any other options?

I have seen the basic 15 courses available on iOS, are there any expansion courses for iOS available beyond these 15 and if so which?

One other thing...if I were to use a laptop instead of iPad does it also need a Wi-Fi connection?

    Many thanks!

1.) You have to be connected in network mode to use most sims. Fitness golf is an exception to that. I'm not sure about e6. Network mode requires wifi.

2.) There are I believe 6 simulators that are compatible with skytrak. The skytrak website has all the info about each one.

3.) The skytrak website lists the computer requirements for e6 (and each of the compatible sims). I'm not sure if an ipad is powerful enough for e6. You would have to check the specs listed on the site and compare with your ipad specs. WGT can be played on an ipad but requires a wifi connection.

Basically the skyrak website can answer all of your questions.

I have the demo version of E6 and it works fine on direct mode rather than network mode for sims. That’s why I picked it. This appears to be the only one where that is the case. Oh, and the iPad works just fine thanks.

There is no information I can find on the Skytrak website as to whether E6 has more than the basic 15 courses for iOS.

Basically, the Skytrak websites can’t answer all of my questions.

Welcome. I tested out E6 on my iPad using the trial version so I would recommend giving that a go first. I can't quite remember if that required a wi-fi connection or not. I wasn't really happy with the graphics of E6 on the iPad however. I ended up putting it on my MacBook Pro running BootCamp and tested it out a bit. I can't quite remember if it worked without wi-fi either but I suppose it did as it took forever to download those courses. The graphics were a little better, but after I considered carefully how much I would use the sim, I ended up going with TGC 2019 due to the thousands of courses plus the ability to easily design your own local golf course using publicly available LiDAR data. With TGC 2019 you do need to connect to wi-fi for most of the courses but you do have a number of official courses that you can connect to offline (I believe that there are 32).

With TGC 2019, I ended up getting a proper gaming laptop as the MBP was a little too slow in the designer.

            Hope this helps. Enjoy.

Very helpful, thanks a lot. I think I may end up going the gaming laptop route eventually and the graphics on the IPad are a wee bit clunky! Thanks a lot.

Yep. The speed is great on the iPad. Really pleased with it.

Sounds like the designed was slow for TGC 2019, but how was game play with the MBP? I've got a 2018 MBP that I"m wondering if it'll run TGC or if I should just stick with my iPad Pro and e6, or if e6 is decent on the MBP, I might go that route.

Hi there. Looks like you have the iPad Pro and E6 setup I’ve currently got. Do you know whether you can get more than the 15 courses that come with the standard E6 subscription? Many thx

Look at the $480 "expanded subscription." Says it has 90 courses for both PC or iOS.

Thanks. I’ve bit the bullet and subscribed and you do get them all in iOS and can use in Direct Mode. Hooray!!!

I was running E6 fine on the MBP with BootCamp and the quality was definitely better than the iPad (I just had the 6th gen iPad, not the pro). So, I ran that for a while. Based on the fact that I could run E6 on the MBP, I assumed that I could also run TGC 2019 on the MBP. Since there was no trial version for this software, I had to consider carefully before deciding which route to go, $300/year for E6 connect or spend $900 for the lifetime version of TGC 2019. I opted for TGC 2019 because of all the courses and the designer. I was really interested in being able to design my local golf courses here in Japan in order to practice and work on course management so opted for TGC 2019.

I could run it fine on the MBP for sim play. However, there were a few issues I found related to speed. One was the designer where it seemed to take a long time to place objects. When you are planting trees on a course one-by-one, it took a long time of about 7-8 seconds for each object. Additionally, I am using the Steam version of TGC 2019 to design the courses so when I tried to play test my course while I was designing or if I wanted to just play some other courses (really to see what I wanted to play on the sim), I would get really choppy graphics unless I scaled the video resolution way down. I have a 32 inch 4k monitor and wanted to get that full 4k experience rather than scaling down to 1080p or lower.

So, I ended up upgrading to 15 inch Dell gaming laptop and I have no regrets.

But if you have a MBP already and wanted to run these sims on Bootcamp, assuming your specs are high enough, you won't have any issue with sim play and you'll find the graphics are much better than the iPad.

                Hope this helps.

Thanks so much. Sim play is really all I care about.. and I don't need 4k. I'm happy with regular 1080p. My MBP isn't top of the line, but it's not a slouch. Graphics are where it hurts:

                  2.6ghz6-core i7
                  32gb RAM
                  but intel UHD graphics 630

So, not really ideal for 4k. But I imagine it'd be OK with graphics scaled down? The 1st gen iPad Pro runs e6 connect pretty fine minor slowness sometimes, but idk if that's network or device related.

Now I really need to device between TGC and e6. The annual sub for each is basically about the same price right now and that's making my decision even harder. heh.
