  • Dedicated Computer for TCG 2019 - RAM or Processor

Hey everybody, I am looking at picking up a gaming PC basically just to run TGC 2019 on, and at my price point I have the option of going with a current gen i7 and 8gb of RAM, or a current gen i5 with 16 gb of RAM. Both computers have a 1660 ti for graphics. Any thoughts on which to prioritize, RAM or processor? As an aside, I have considered buying the i7 and then adding RAM to it, but while I've built desktops, I have a general fear of opening up a laptop for some reason. Thanks ahead of time for any responses!

Don't fear opening up your laptop, I've done it many times and on every one of them I've owned the RAM has been very easy to change out and upgrade. You can probably find a youtube video walking you through doing it on the very model you're purchasing.

Agree with above, however I would prioritize GPU over CPU for this. an i5 with a 2060 or 2070 vs an i7 with a 1660ti... I'll take the RTX any day over the GTX. I mean basically a rtx 2070 is on par with a gtx 1080. What is the price point, and are you locked into a laptop, or would you consider a desktop?

Thanks for the response! I'm sure I'm capable of doing it, and who knows, I may ultimately do it, but let's say I don't. Any thoughts on what I prioritize to get the best performance of TCG possible? I've read that games are generally not that taxing on your processor, so I'm thinking the extra RAM probably makes the most sense. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Ram really won't make that big of a difference to be honest... Again, if your talking about prioritizing components, its GPU first, then CPU, then Ram... 8GB is fine for what you have there. Should you need to upgrade in the future, its pretty easy to swap in some more ram and depending on speed of existing ram, you could benefit from a higher speed ram or if possible Overclock the base speed of the Ram.

Thanks Skeet! I am on a serious budget. I am willing to consider a desktop, but would prefer to have the laptop (1) because my set up is in my garage and i want to be able to take the computer in and out (temps in chicago get low, and my kids would i'm sure be chucking basketballs into it), and (2) because I do have the occasional need for a laptop at for work, and don't currently have one. So basically I'm looking at spending like 800. However, if the 1660 ti aint going to cut it for TGC, and i need to get something in the 20 series, I expect I'm looking at over 1000, and at that point i may as well keep using the ipad and looking at a little ass screen, because its gonna be a couple months before I can afford to make the jump, unfortunately.

The 1660ti will be fine... I know you will be able to run at 1080p with that, and possibly even at 1440p... I'm just saying that in the grand scheme of things, the GPU is the most important piece of hardware that you should invest in for gaming. TGC is not going to bottleneck that GPU with an i5 CPU... Either one will be fine.

If you aren't a 4K set up any of those options should work fine. Honestly if you're on a strict budget and don't plan on going over 1080p resolution, you could probably find something in the $500-600 range that would work for you, especially with holiday deals. I have an i5 with a GTX 1060 from a couple of years ago that runs it without problems for me.

Well thats good news. I've seen several i5s with 1050 and 1060s at the 500-600 price range, but was worried about it being able to hack it. black friday ftw!

I do think Protee recommends at least a 1060, a 1050 (especially a 1050Ti) may be able to pull it off but I can't speak personally to that. Make sure if you get a 1060, it's NOT a 1060 Max-Q which is a lower power version made for smaller, lighter laptops. It has significantly weaker performance.

Donbroco25 Just saw this come up and thought of your post, sub $600 for a GTX 1650 laptop:

Still may want to upgrade the Ram, but this ought to run TGC quite well.
