Hi All,
I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro running TGC 2019 in bootcamp. For simulation play, I just use the laptop as I am hitting into a NetReturn net outside and it seems to work fine as is. However, when I am designing a course, it seems quite slow. For example, when I place objects, it takes a fairly long time to refresh (for example, it takes approximately 10 seconds to refresh when adding a tree). Additionally, if I am doing quite a bit of designing and it seems to be taxing my computer, i.e., the fan is running pretty high, and I try to playtest the hole or the course, I get very choppy video and the shot ends up being a very heavy slice. At that point, I generally have to restart the computer in order to get it to playtest normally (and this is even if I have the video scaled down to 1920x1080 (although the monitor is full 4k resolution capable.
I am thinking that it is probably the PC's specs that are causing the latency and issue.
I think my options would be to 1) get another laptop that is more suited for gaming, perhaps with a larger monitor (say 15 or even 17 inch) to replace the MBP or 2) continue using the 13 inch MBP for the simulation and get a relatively inexpensive, yet powerful desktop PC just for designing and playtesting/playing courses on Steam version of the game.
Any recommendations on options 1 or 2 above? Keep in mind that my sim play has to be mobile as I am playing on a rooftop balcony where the computer needs to be taking down and put up after every play so a fixed desktop + projector/screen will never really be an option for me.
A larger laptop screen would be great although I can probably live with the 13 inch MBP for sim play purposes and I assume I would be sacrificing significant speed and cost to get a new laptop as opposed to just a more powerful and less expensive PC. I already have the monitor, keyboard and mouse so I would really only need a CPU that could deliver fast performance (ideally at full 4k resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 resolution) but without breaking the bank. I am looking in the $1,000-$1,500 USD range.
I am wondering what would be the optimal specs in terms of cost for performance. I am in Japan so the models that they sell in the US may not equate to what we can find here so I would really want to know what would be an acceptable processor/speed, amount of RAM, HD (will that really matter).
Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated.
