  • C-Drive Full

Hey guys, I need some help. I wouldn’t consider myself computer illiterate but I’m certainly not an IT guy.

My C-drive is full. It’s only 128 GB. My D-drive is almost empty though and has over a TB of space. I downloaded a program to transfer files and it helped for a while but it’s full again and the program says I can’t move anything else. I went into the disk management and was able to shrink the D-drive but could not increase the C-Drive.

I’m at a loss for what to do. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Couple of things to check. In the Windows directory look for a Temp folder, delete everything in it. Also check your download folder and delete unwanted programs or other files. Also check the recycle bin and empty it.

Other thing to do is install or reinstall any programs and when it asks for where to install it, just change the C: to a D: for directory. location.

It might sound trivial but empty your Recycle Bin to start. Your next option is to run the "Disk Cleanup" tool under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

That will help temporarily but given this day and age, 120GB of OS drive is too small the moment you begin to install other applications on it.

Check if your motherboard supports a NVME drive or SSD (Sata). If it does, you can pickup a 500GB SSD/NVME drive for $70 (1TB will run about $125). If you're going to have a bunch of apps and games installed, you'll want 500GB minimum but go with 1TB. SSD's get slower (relatively speaking) the more packed they get.
