  • Laptop vs desktop

I realize that the consensus here is the desktop is the better way to go vs. laptop. But putting that aside, if both had the same specs in terms of memory, ssd space, graphics card, etc, would they both have the same or similiar performance? Or would the desktop still perform better.

You done flaming in the other post lol?

You can expect very similar performance. For the most part desktops are a little faster but they are very similar. Most laptop CPU/GPUs use the same chips as there desktop counterparts just detuned to handle the small form factor cooling requirements. The only problem is expansion. When you want to start adding accessories like cameras and extra monitors (not so much anymore with USB-C) or streaming it becomes a problem. A laptop is purpose built. It’s purpose is to be portable and there has to be sacrifices for that portability.

Good quick watch that showcases the difference between laptop vs desktop.

The new 30 series GPU's may be slightly different (this was 20 series) but I don't think there has been enough testing for the 30 series yet.

In general the desktop performs better even with similar specs. Laptops just can't keep the components as cool as a desktop. Unless it's some gigantic laptop that is basically a desktop anyway.

There was just a few video's posted by Linus and Jayztwocents that discussed the performance differences between desktop 3000 series GPU's and the laptop equivalent. Linus actually did a great visual representation of why laptop GPU's in general are going to perform worse than the desktop variant. He literally picked up a 3080 gpu for a desktop and showed it against a laptop and its massive. Additionally, he explains the power consumption dilemma as well. as Blaiser said, it comes down to heat and power.

My old beat-to-shot surface book laptop works great. I don't care if a golf ball ricochets off this thing old thing either. My sim is in a huge unheated shop space so I bring my gear in and out every day. Too much moisture if I leave it out there (Redmond, WA). Optoma EH 412ST also comes in and out. Built a floor enclosure for that. The one they sell is so expensive, I just used some scrap 3/4" MDF, 1/8th inch thick Lexan over the front, ($9). Left side of box cut out and covered with perforated aluminum 1/16" thick ($15). AC infinity cabinet fan side opposite that to pull air across the projector and out the side ($25). Covered top with scraps of sound deadening material from Home Depot, 3/4" thick that I had from an office project. Cheap as hell if you have to buy some. It does not deaden the ball 100% if you hit the ramp so I covered the top with a big bath towel folded over. That deadens it completely. I am sure there is something better for the top of the enclosure, but I like to re-cycle and re-purpose so this is fine for now. Saved me $300. Can spend on beer.
