  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX1660 Ti vs. RTX4060

    Hi All,

I have an outdoor sim setup so my system needs to be portable (my outdoor sim is on my 3rd floor balcony and I generally do most of my designing on my 1st floor). As such, I currently have a Dell G5 5990 with Intel i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB HD, and the GTX 1660 Ti. This seems to be fine for sim play as I generally don't have any lag or any issues (although sometimes there is).

I bought this computer 5 years ago so it is now getting on in years and is out of warranty.

For sim play, although there don't seem to be real issues, for designing, it is fairly slow. It takes some time to render placing objects, saving and updating. The most noticeable lag is when placing objects as that takes some time.

I am now considering upgrading my laptop to the G15 that has Intel i9, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB HD, and has the RTX 4060. This seems like an upgrade in every way, including getting a new laptop under warranty, a new battery, etc. I estimate that, after selling the old laptop, this upgrade will probably cost me around $1,000.

My question for everyone is, do you think this upgrade is worth it? My other option would be to build something myself (a desktop) solely for designing courses that would be really fast, especially for rendering and placing objects, and keeping the current laptop that I have for sim play.

Again, considering that I would only use this computer for course design and sim play, would it be economically viable to have two separate computers for this and would there be a cost/performace benefit to that? Additionally, would there be any benefit at all to upgrading to the new laptop vs. just keeping what I have until it completely dies (taking into consideration what may be available in the next number of years given the life expectancy for the current computer). I am not really doing a lot of designing recently (although I might do more if the computer adds significant speed performance.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If spending money on an upgrade, I would at least jump to the 4070 super. The price difference between it and a 4060 isn't that significant. Costco has one I'm considering.
