  • Building in Phases - Impact Screen Recommendations

I am working on a brand new build for my garage. What I know so far is that I will build a 10' x 10' frame out of either PVC or EMT. In the future, I will have an impact screen with a projector. However for now, I will be starting with just a net and a side TV.

First, I want to buy a net that can be used today to hit balls, and in the future as a backing for the impact screen. Reading that a lot of people use archery netting as a backing on the impact screen. Question is, if I use archery netting to start, is that sufficient to receive 160mph golf balls on its own?

Second, when I do add a true impact screen, does anyone have a recommendation on a sub $200 10'x10' screen?

As a side note - I find researching this information to be very 2003. Today, it's so easy to search on the web for best TV under $400 and get your results. There's such a small market for this info that research is a pain. I wish we had threads in the DIY forums like "best mat under $100", "best mid priced mat", "best overall mat", where people could provide their insight and we could have a ranked list to make the research easier.

I bought this heavy net to hit into. Now use it as a baffle to support my impact screen. https://cnwnetting.com/shop-nets/gol...-impact-panel/

Supertex makes a good impact screen under $200.

I didn't skimp on the mat after reading guys jack up their wrists & elbows from overuse on thin mats. I went with a CCE and have been very pleased. It helped my ball striking too bc it's not forgiving on fat shots like driving range mats.

When building your screen frame I would NOT use PVC.You will never be able to get the screen tight enough to look good. PVC dries out over time and becomes brittle.

I've had a PVC frame for 7 years. My screen looks great, is plenty tight and the PVC has not become brittle. PVC last forever. I don't think they'd create a product to bury or run inside walls that becomes brittle. I do suggest a larger diameter PVC as opposed to a smaller diameter for strength. I use 2 1/2 inch pipe. I would also suggest building a wedge or ramp made of wood covered in carpet to protect the bottom of the frame from golf balls. It will shatter.

I second the comment on the Country Club Elite Real Feel mat. I am in my third one. They are great! I used a thinner mat prior and my wrists and elbows wear paying for it. My wrists and elbows have never bothered me since I started using the CCE. I'll never use another mat. My only complaint is that they wear a little more quickly under your feet than some other mats, but I've found that frequent mat rotation slows the wear down. My last one lasted about 2 years, and I probably hit 1200 balls a week on it. I rotated it about twice a month. All mats wear though.

So what you're saying is, buy the mat from Costco and then return it for a new one every 6 months?

              Hey Mike,

I went with Carl's premium screen. 18' x 10' piece was around $1100 (I think). I really like the way it turned out. I got the material raw and used tarp clips to mount it.Was very easy to do. It's a thick material that has a tight knit so it will show the image nicely. If you check their website, sometimes they have specials on material that is already cut. I think they had a 10' x 10' finished piece on sale when I was purchasing my screen. Good luck.

Lol... I suppose that's an option.

Awesome, I bet the screen tensions better with that shape too. I really like it

I 3rd the CCE mat. That is what I'm using. If you concerned about your elbow, wrist and shoulder... I would also suggest using graphite shafts.

I bought a supertex and quickly switched to Carl's premium also. It's thick, quiet by comparison, and adding a baffle isn't necessary due to its weight but I did just because I already had it. Image is top notch and they're great to deal with. Ordered on a Thursday and had it that Saturday!

I just can't justify more than 200 on a screen.

When it comes to the impact-screen, are your guys' tight at the bottom, or do they hang loose?

Mine hangs loose. I have the supertex and have had it about a year. Starting to get small holes higher up in the short iron area.

carl's premium is where it's at. Love mine. quiet, seems durable (2 years no holes or problems yet) and inexpensive.
