  • Roll up screen

i saw the post a few months ago from domino about his roll up screen build.
Has anyone else also built a setup with a roll up screen?
looking to potentially do the same and looking for feedback on things that worked, thinks that didn't work, tweeks to the setup, how the screen is holding up etc.
    thanks

I've had a Sportscreen, 10' (manual), setup for about a month now. I have an impact screen in front (velcroed at the top). I also have netting on the sides and top. The top part is important because while I haven't hit any shots to the side of the screen, my wedges frequently crawl up the screen and want to bounce forward. The only way I could kill that was to velcro the netting to the impact screen about a foot from the top of the screen. This works well and keeps high shots from hitting the roller or bouncing forward or climbing up the screen and over the top net.

The general bounce back from both screens is best when the impact screen is a little separated from the black Sportscreen. When they are close together, there seems to be more bounce back. I like this setup because I don't need any other poles and when I want to roll up the screen, I only have to disconnect the netting. I also have a blackout cloth behind the Sportscreen, but it doesn't do anything concerning bounce back afaik - only darkens room and screen. I had a cage type setup for 3 years and this is going to work better.

If the sportscreen and impact screen are on the same roller, then how do you create separation between the two to reduce bounce back? Thanks,

I've got a Sportscreen (10' manual) in my garage as well. I installed ikea curtain track rail to the ceiling along the sides and behind the screen and hung netting (approx. 6' x 12' x 6') from the ceiling. To protect the curtain tracks and roller, I cut 8" strips of 5/8" plywood & covered them with 1/2" closed cell foam and vinyl. I hung these header pieces from the ceiling with small (4") shelf brackets.

I attached a 10' x 10' HQ2 screen with velcro to the roller and installed the metal bar in a pocket at the bottom of the screen. I attach 3 bungees on each side of the screen with tarp clips and clip them back to my garage walls when I'm using the screen. I'm really liking this setup, I can set it up or take it down in 5 minutes...the noise & bounce back is minimal and the picture quality is great.

Not sure if my description painted much of a picture. Maybe I'll take a couple pictures tonight and post.

Are these just those garage hockey nets? I really like this idea if a roll up screen but can't seem to find what you are using. Any way someone could drop a link to this screen? Thanks

Mike, thanks for the pictures. I was looking at this and was getting confused a bit because everything looked like hockey gear. Based on what you are saying is that you purchased separately a screen and attached that using velcro to the sportscreen. That enabled you to roll it up without an issue.

              - Can you please let us know what type of screen you purchased? Is it this --> http://www.par2pro.com/shop/product_...roducts_id=138

              - What type of net do you have behind the screen and what is it's distance from the primary screen you are using to hit balls into?

What I did not see is how you "tie down" the main screen? Most everything that i've read says the screens should be tied down on the sides to help with the impact of the ball hitting it. With all that said, I've been looking for a basic manual screen that can be used and this looks like the most cost effective thing around.

Yeah, I think the Sportscreen is generally targeted towards the hockey market. Works great for a golf sim too!

My screen is an HQ2 raw --> http://www.par2pro.com/shop/product_...products_id=98

The net is a 7/8" black golf impact net (10'x24') purchased online from www.networldsports.com I would say its about 5 or 6" behind the screen.

I had a pocket sewn in the bottom of the screen, and I installed the Sportscreen metal bar into that pocket. When I lower the screen, I leave it about an inch above the floor and the rod keeps the screen vertically tensioned. I attach 3 bungees on each side of the screen (about 16" down from top, middle, and 16" up from floor) with tarp clips and clip them back to my garage walls when I'm using the screen.

I don't even really notice. Any balls that hit it, ricochet up into the net and drop down. Works great!

I glued 1/2" closed cell foam (like the playroom flooring coloured tiles) to the front, then overlapped it with foam on the bottom of the header in an L shape.

mikeingp Did you get the projector screen hemmed at all? I've read if the sides aren't hemmed they can start to fray and come apart but maybe the clips prevent this.
Are you happy with the quality of the screen?

No, I didn't get the sides hemmed. I take the clips on and off every time I roll up the screen and haven't noticed any fraying or other problems. I did get a rod pocket hemmed in the bottom to hold the steel sportscreen bar but have never reconsidered doing the sides.

I really like the HQ2 screen, the picture is great and it seems to take a ball well. A coworker who is thinking of getting a system setup came over last week and looked over my setup, including the screen. Other than some spots from hitting dirty balls (or maybe transfer from dirty clubs?), we couldn't see any fraying, tiny tears, or any deficiencies in the stitching. I've only had the screen since March so probably shouldn't expect any problems yet...but I'm happy so far.

I've purchased the sportscreen and I'm starting my first time build. I've read through everything but I'm still confused on how you guys are setting up your impact screen. If I understand, I'll velcro the impact screen to the sportscreen but then you have a net or moving blanket behind the sportscreen? What will happen if I don't have the net or blanket, just more bounceback?

Thanks for helping a newbie out

I don't think you really need another blanket or net behind the screen (even though I have one). Attached your impact screen to the roller with velcro, in front of the black sportscreen. The black sportscreen will provide a good amount of dampening in regards to bounceback.

Same experience for me - no blankets or netting behind sportscreen and minimal bounce back

Also setting mine up and was wondering what you guys do to eliminate waves. Tried zip ties through the velcro loops in the middle and bottom with a supertex impact screen but ended up worse. Do you guys just let the impact screen hang?

I am interested in what ours do as well
i have used two tarp clips on each side, down toward bottom of the screen. Helps some but still get some waves
another idea, but not tried yet was, was to wrap screen over metal bar at bottom of sport screen and secure with some magnets

I just let mine hang. Picture is good enough for me. But I'm not expecting movie quality image out of my SIM either. I am however thinking about using some sticky velcro and attaching to the sides of the impact screen to the sports screen to keep it a little tighter for less waves. Can you guys post a picture on what your talking about? My waves don't seem to bad on mine. sorry picture is sideways. won't upload correctly.
