  • Which Dimensions Would You Choose? Golf Shed

I'm building a golf shed in my backyard but limited to approximately 200 sq ft gross floor area to be building within city code. The good news is I'm allowed to have the building be 12' tall so ceiling height won't be a problem. So I'm going to try and stay under 220 sq. feet to be real close to code. Which Option would you choose and remember this is inside floor dimensions?
    1. 12' wide x 17' long (204 sq ft)
    2. 13' wide x 16' long (208 sq ft)
    3. 14' wide x 15' long (210 sq ft)

I'm a lefty. My kid is a righty but only 4 years old. This will be built just for golf so I can maximize the interior space by not including anything on the walls other than bare minimums like a monitor. I will have a projector and screen which I expect to go wall to wall. I'm hoping at 17' long I could have a small seating area in back corners but not sure I could if I shorten it to gain length. Please vote on the best dimensions and why would be nice too. I know these aren't ideal but something is better than nothing.

Width, width, width! Especially if for both lefty and rightly!

Option 3 for sure. Since the hitting area needs to be centered to cater leftys and rightys. Maybe have seats in two opposite corners. Build the screen close to the wall 6-8". You want to really maximize space. Also think about ventilation at an early stage. Even in winter my sim room gets really warm.

This depends entirely on what tech you use. AboutGolf makes an insanely good sim that is offset for left or right for 12 feet wide so option 1 would be good. If using floor sensors you have to have 14 feet wide. If using photo launch monitors you can easiliy set up in offset with 2 LM. 15 foot length is tough.

Depends on what technology you use.

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like 14' wide it is. It will be well insulated (floors, walls, ceiling) and I'm planning on putting in a mini split duct heater/AC unit. The price keeps going up for this hobby but looking forward to having an indoor place to hit. Build is scheduled to start first week of November.

Make sure to pay attention to the operating temperature of whatever mini splits you are considering and that they will work for your region. Some DIY ones have small operating windows.

I have a GCQuad. Doesn't seem to matter how small the space is for that unit but I have to be able to swing a club and I'm on the tall side. I wish I could afford AboutGolf. My instructor is a dealer for them and that bay with the curved screen is incredible.

That's something I never though about checking but will now. Fortunately I live in a fairly mild climate (Seattle) so most should fit my needs. Hopefully all of them handle rain well

I was literally a click away from ordering one and happen to still be doing some research and found it on other forums about people having issues due to this. The one i was looking at would not have worked for me in MI due to pretty large temperature swings in our area. Good luck in your setup and post some pictures as you move along.

Sorry, don't want to hijack a thread but I'm curious regarding your research, etc (both legendsfan & wbond) on those min-split heater & a/c units. I've gotten a couple of estimates for my garage setup. I'm in MN so I was looking as some of the units that are rated for lower temps. The last estimate was for a Fujitsu unit that was rated to 100% down to 5F and 75% to -15F. They also suggested a separate small electric heater to supplement the heat on days where it is really cold and I need to increase the temp quickly.

I'm a noob when it comes to anything HVAC related so trying to learn and figure out the best options.

I was looking at one of the DIY units where you could do everything by yourself. I can't remember the unit (maybe climateright or mr kool), but it had a smaller operating window, I think it had to be above 40F or something and as you get closer to the ends, the efficiency really starts to drop. The larger the operating window, the better the unit, the more cost it ended up being. So i went with a 220 heater and window ac unit instead for my garage. The garagejournal forum had quite a bit of info if I recall. Also look up reviews for them to see what people said.

I looked into the DIY units but they would not be effective/efficient for a MN winter. The quote I received is definitely not cheap for the mini split. I was initially going to do a heater only via gas but the garage is too dang hot in the summers to get a round in too. Unfortunately, I don't have a window in the garage to do one of those units. I will check out that forum. thx

I'm curious if you finished your build and how it works for you? I"m in Seattle too and am doing a shed build. 12x14x10.

I have architect plans but not scheduled for build until mid November. Looking like final exterior dimensions will be 15' w by 17' l. I'll have to live with a slight offset and probably not enough room for more than a small chair in each back corner. Hopefully those are interior dimensions you posted because that will be on the tight side.

I just posted pics of my completed 13x15. You will see the offset. Go as wide as you can - in my opinion after doing one 16x16 is the perfect space.

15 length is fine though you can swing any club comfortably with the hitting area 7.5 from the screen.

16 wide by 20 long is optimal for a set up

City regulations definitely won't let me go ideal size so I have to be creative. Since I'm a lefty and software let's you offset I'm thinking about having hitting area be offset to allow for ideal space (7.5') behind a lefty. That leaves me with 6.5' for a righty which would only be good enough for a 4 year old which I have. So I was thinking for righties I would install carriage doors behind them. Would an opening of 8' by 8' with the doors centered on where the golfer stands be sufficient or would they need to be wider or taller? This would force me to have these doors open for a righty but 90% of the time it would be just for lefty use.

Should work good! I got use to the offset after a week and with the offset adjust feature it works fine! You will enjoy it - I have to limit myself, I feel like a kid again with my setup. Really nice to work on your game
