  • Screen Issues...Creased and "wavy"

Ok, I finally got my Black Friday projector and set it up and noticed how creased and "wavy" my Carls screen is. I believe this is because I don't have the sides of the screen attached to anything as the horizontal frame is about 8 inches in front of the vertical frames on the Microbay frame. Is there something I can hang down from the horizontal frame that I can attach the sides of the screen to?

Any tips on what I can put on top of the screen to give it a "blackout" look?

Pull the screen tight on the sides at the top with tarp clamps and bungees.

I'd fold the bottom flap up around the back, sew it like a big hem and let the screen hang without touching the floor, and fix your spacing along the top. I've seen a few Carl's (Premium) screens hanging fine with no waves with no side attachments. If you have the cheapy, lighter Carl's, then you can put a rod in the hem you've made.

Good looking build. You can use a mini clothes steamer and it will get rid of the creases pretty quick. You will need to put left-right tension on the screen to get rid of the waves. One option would be to cut the EMT on the top and bottom and insert a 3-way connector and a vertical piece of EMT in line with the screen. Do that on both sides and then you can bungee from the vertical grommets on each side of your screen to the added vertical EMT pieces. Not sure if/how your side panels tie into the screen for ball containment.

Blacking out the top of your enclosure might be a bit trickier, although I believe there is an option when buying the Microbay to go with blackout material. You could buy blackout cloth and drape it over the top of the frame, but not sure how you would secure it and make it taught so that it does not hang down in the middle. You also have that vertical piece of EMT above the screen that could pose a safety issue if a ball gets up that high. I recall seeing users on this forum that had come up with a fix to eliminate balls from ricocheting back at them....and it wasn't pipe insulation.

I have the Carl's premium and it is super clean and tight and only bounce back issues are from higher lift and my floor not being padded but I was stunned at how the bounce back was basically perfect, I was really worried about that. You can see from pics, I just got their ball bungees and used all the grommets on top and bottom.

I made the enclosure 1" bigger than the screen, and thankfully waited for the screen first as the size I was told on the phone was wrong. They said no more than 2" and 1" seems to be good tension. ALso
what maybe the pic doesn't show is the bottom
side grommets I bunged around the pipe coming away from the screen and not the vertical one tge
rest are on. That helped give it that finishing no ripple
          tension.

i would just play with it and mess with different bungee angles or tensions and it will come out. I have nothing to compare it to but I am really happy wit the Carl's screen....projector can't get here fast enough.

Very nice setup! I'm currently in the process of building a frame that is about the same as what you have here. The biggest thing I'm trying to figure out is all of the EMT fittings I will need. How many of each angle did you get to build this enclosure? Where did you get the fittings?

I’m about to build the same. What did you use for the sides/top for blackout. Just a regular black fabric sheets? And how did you secure the blackout fabric? Thanks!

Thats a nice looking setup. Is that a DIY enclosure? What size is it? I cant tell from the 2nd pic,do you have netting around the sides/top, or just blackout fabric?

I may upgrade from my NetReturn Pro this year, and your setup looks like it would fit perfectly in my garage.

It is 10x8. I made it myself. I have no netting and just blackout and have rubber on front poles behind blackout but no rubber on back poles yet or maybe ever. It is a big target from that close and so far I have had a couple hosel shanks that still had another foot of screen to go so I am not overly worried. I have under $300 in it for everything except the screen, since I made the encloses so cheaply I got the Carl's premium screen.
