Impact screen options

I have a unfinished basement for my build. Screens come with grommets, hanging, notched, pockets sewn, etc. I see the supertex says never buy one with grommets because it will rip. Why so many options and which one is most popular? Seems like hanging will be too loose on the sides if not tightened.

I plan on on creating a horseshoe frame with side curtains but I won’t have any walls on either side. Thanks.

BUMP...How does a person know which option to purchase. Is it based on if you use conduit, angle iron or use clips/cords. Or just personal preference?

Wish I had a good answer for you but I don't really think there is one "right" way to install a screen.

My first screen was the Supertex screen and I read the same thing you did. Gromets are bad and will always tear and turn your screen into ........... I think that's .......... Carl's makes a screen with grommets that they sells for a thousand dollars, never heard anyone complain about them tearing.

I just got the raw screen from Daniel on the group buy here, put it up with bungies and tarp clips. So far so good. But if I were to do it again I would have grommets put into the top of the screen (it was an option in the buy). It was a pain in the tail getting the bottom nice and straight with the raw edge and clips.

folded edge for pipe, grommets or raw edge. I think they all work pretty well. some just take a little more work.

I’ve had 2 Par2Pro screens over the last 3 years. The HQ and then the SQHQ. Both were finished screens, and both had around 30 grommets round the top and sides.
The only reason I bought the second one was because it was the new SQ (super quiet) which was a discounted BETA trial and offered a quieter impact and less bounce back.
There was nothing wrong with my original.
No rips, tears or issues with grommets at all. If you made the bungees too tight, then you’d get creases...
so the initial setup was important to get the right tension. I imagine this is the same whether you have loops, tarp clips or grommets though?

Too funny... I remember my original screen research and "learning" that ooh... grommets BAAAD. Not once have I heard anyone complain about screens ripping due to grommet stress. My experience is similar to StanMI ... I bought a Carl's premium screen with grommets and it has been fantastic. I also bought an unfinished direct from the mill screen from Daniel as an eventual backup... although now, thanks to Stan, I'm not looking forward to putting it up with tarp clips lol

I would say that you should get the best quality screen that you can afford. The better ones really are quieter, more durable, better image, and have less bounce back. Grommets are great, IMO, if you have the option...

Carl’s premium screen with grommets. Quiet, thick, dense, long lasting, and makes great projector screen. You won’t regret it. Expensive but worth every penny.
