  • Netting or padding behind impact screen?

First post, so go easy on me please. I just received a 10' x 18' foot Carl's Premium Impact screen and will be hanging it with 1" EMT piping and fittings. I have plenty of room as I'm putting it in my shop area which is 24' x 24' with 12' ceiling. I'd like to do this right the first time so I would love any input. My first concern is what would be best to put directly behind the impact screen to cushion the blows and reduce bounce back. I would also welcome any and all suggestions regarding distance from screen to tee box and projector, which balls would be best to use, should the balls have any ink markings, etc. Thank you all in advance, and I look forward to your help.

Hey. Fairly new myself but in my readings.....You dont NEED padding behind the impact screen, but you can. Hang the screen loosely to reduce bounce back. And at least 1 foot away from a wall. The balls should be clean and free of markings (Sharpie marks) but use anything you want. Your sim should have suggested distances to tee off from. Most of what I read say between 7 and 12 feet. As long as you can hit a wedge and not go over your screen (or enclosure), you should be fine though.

Also new here and I just installed a 9x16' Carl's Premium impact screen. My understanding is that it has layers built into it and no additional padding is needed. There are other similar threads regarding this topic, but it is confusing because people have all different types of netting and screens.

For future posts in this thread, can those people who contribute identify if they have the Carl's Premium or other screen?

I have only had mine up a week or so and have only used 'almostgolf' balls b/c I don't have proper flooring or other protection up to use real golf balls at the moment. So far, I think it's awesome! I used the EMT framing with the carl's connectors. I have my screen 13" away from wall and think it will be just fine using real golf balls. I stand 9' away from screen center. Carl's bungees with 2" gap around all tops and sides as well. Bottom has limited bungees through the middle to decrease bounce back.

Thanks teearejay. I believe I will put up some type of barrier/baffle netting behind the impact screen. Not sure if white or black netting would be better as far as picture quality is concerned.

I have a Carl's Premium 10x7'9" and I been pounding golf balls into for the last few months but it does leave impact depressions while playing. I am thinking about hanging this behind the screen (just in the hitting zone)in an effort to reduce the impact depression. Let me know what you guys think.

For what ever reason I can't get link to work so just copy and paste the above into browser.

Thank you as well Trickle007. I will experiment with a barrier/baffle net behind the impact screen and put up moving pads behind the barrier/baffle net. I hope to get this accomplished in the next two weeks, and I will report back with my results and thoughts.

What thickness, (in inches), are you using for the memory foam. I built my first sim set up in the back yard using EMT to test. I loved it so much that i built a new one in a patio cover so that it is weather proof. I have low ceilings in house and garage so this was my only option. Not much has changed with the exception of a larger impact screen, moved from carls preferred 10 x 10 raw to carls preferred 10 x 15 finished edge. I am now noticing that i am have major bounce back issues. My tee is about 7' from the screen, same as before, and i hung the screen, then heavy duty moving blanket, then commando cloth blackout curtain and am still having sever bounce back. I can hit irons and catch the ball out of the air and wedges slam into the roof of the structure. I relieved the tension from the bottom and still no luck.

This memory foam trick seem to be promising unless anyone has any other advice?

      Subscribed.

I gave the screen from the buy here. It ggasva great image and gas held up very well. When I first put it up I had zero bounce back, ball dropped straight down. After a couple months I started noticing balls com8ng back at me. I've played with different tensions but still have issues.
Might try the memory foam thing.

Another thing for the OP. Make sure your clubs are very clean. Any dirt that transfers to a ball can be like sandpaper on you screen.

Is this just a Carl’s Premium impact screen thing or what? I’ve been battling this bounce back issue for a while now. If I hit directly into the middle… no issues. BUT, if you hit a wedge that hits about 1 foot from the top… watch out. The outside perimeter of the Carl’s screen is the danger zone. I’ve ordered a net to put behind it (in addition the comforter I already have behind it). We’ll see…

What kind of net did you order for behind your screen? Have you noticed a reduction in the bounce back?

Is it possible your hitting the top of your screen and the ball is then hitting your ceiling after the screen and coming back at you ??? If that's the case, a little padding on your ceiling may help.

I hung a cheap moving blanket, loosely, behind my screen. Kills the ball and it rolls back just about to me. I was behind the screen recently, and noticed the moving blanket is getting torn to shreds on drives, so I'll have to replace it at some point.
