    How tight are EMT fittings?

I am trying to design a custom indoor hitting cage using EMT pipe. Instead of doing the traditional frame from the ground up, I am thinking of mounting the crossbar to the wall, sort of like a curtain rod. In order to do this, I was thinking of mounting 2 foot pads to the wall, running about 15 inches of EMT out of it into 90 degree fittings, and then a crossbar to hang my net and screen on.

Here's my question. How tightly does the pipe fit into the fittings sold by Carl's, tarps.com, etc.? Is it fairly loose or does it fight pretty tight?

Here's a picture of a foot pad and a curtain rod for a visual of what i'm looking to accomplish.

I've got both Carl's and the tarps.com fittings. Both are about the same. It's not real tight when just looking at the OD of the EMT vs the ID of the fittings, I'd say around 1/8" oversized. I can be a bit more accurate when I get home if you need them. But, the screws hold the EMT in place very securely so the end result should work fine with that type of approach.

StuartG Thanks for the info. Do you think something like this would work better?

I don't know about 'better' or not, hard to say for sure but looks like they should work as well. Main difference is that the other welded fittings allow for deeper EMT insertion - which could translate to more strength or shorter EMT pipes or a bit more adjustability. But none of those may be needed so it might not make any difference.

They will work fine. The eye bolt holds the EMT in place just fine if adequately tightened.
