minimum room dimension for enclosure

I am planning to purchase Carl's enclosure for a new build in a room that's going to be 15 ft x 15.5 ft. The enclosure I am looking at is 12x9x5. I am worried that the depth of the enclosure might end up making depth of the room very tight (15 ft).

Would this work or will I need to drop the idea of an enclosure and just go with a screen ?

The amount of room you have is fixed - so (IMO) the decision isn't really about space (for a 5' depth enclosure). The main difference in an enclosure vs "just a screen" is how much extra side/roof protection you will end up having compared to how much you might need. 5' depth doesn't protect against the worst shanks or flops - but it should handle most mis-hits. But that's a generalization, you know your game better than I do.

The other consideration is that (at least for the Carl's enclosure) is the black top/side panels help keep ambient light from interfering with the brightness of the projected image on the screen. That may or may not be helpful depending on how much control of the ambient light you have.

So if you don't need much protection or are not worried about what will happen if the ball misses the screen - and you can control ambient light - then the screen only option maybe the better way to go.

Thanks for the detailed response. I would love to have the 5’ enclosure to block ambient light and for protection against shanks etc. what I want to know is if 5’ is doable in the dimensions I have available

I would think so - but everyone swing's a little differently (how tall and how flat the swing) or has different comfort levels to how close they can be to something and still swing comfortably. The question you'll have to ask yourself (or go into the room and test out for yourself) is how far away from the back wall do you have to be to swing comfortably (with the longest club like driver)? And at that location, will the cross-bar (9' above the ground) of the enclosure interfere with the swing?

Worst case you could do a custom order for a 3' or 4' enclosure depth. Carl's is very good when it comes to custom orders.
