  • How to get wrinkles out of a screen?

OK. So I upgraded my homebrew garage golf sim from an old standard 'Carl's golf' screen to a new mid-level premium screen. My old one developed some dethreading spit at the impact area. So the new screen looks great, but it's thicker, kicks the ball back harder, and sounds louder. It's a nice screen though so I can live with that. However, out of the box it has wrinkles. Not many but a few folds and creases won't go away even after months hanging and use. I've tried the steam tool but got nothing for results. Any ideas? Suggestions. Help.

Chuck I just hung my screen and have wrinkles/creases also. I haven't finished it yet, so I will be following along to see what works.

I hope someone else has seen this kind of an issue too DejaVu. I found one of those hand-held dewrinkler-steamers devices at Costco and gave that a try. It's the big creases that are giving me grief. Fortunately, in my case, they are at the outer edges of the projection area but they are always there taunting me. Never had an issue with the 'Standard' Carl's Golf screen model - It might indent from a hard strike, but you just rubbed a club over the screen and it would disappear.

Yep i have creases on my Carls premium but im sure it was my fault from unfolding then refolding it. They said they would disappear over time and in the 3 months since i hung the screen they havent really disappeared but after hitting a lot of balls I seem to care less about the creases. They only really show up and are distracting in some movies, especially anything im watching with a lot of white backgrounds. I tried the steamer etc but no luck. They say to move it into the sun for a while but since its pretty big I think id probably create more wrinkles doing this.

Taunting you Haha Chuck I totally hear ya. I have the Par2Pro SQ Raw screen. It's great, low noise, limited bounce back, with great picture quality (all judging from just setting it up), but the wrinkles are from top to bottom. Here's roughly what they say per their screen-care recommendations...(don't take it literal, as I edited it to fit on this page and I am not quoting them).

    ---General Guidelines

    ---
Mounting - Do not put anything behind the screen that may get damaged (ie: windows) as a ball may go through the screen at the end of the screen’s lifespan.

--Wrinkles - Steam w/ cloth over steamer to prevent water stains - Low Setting to prevent melting of the yarn - Steam iron flat on turf flooring for best results- Pressing too hard may produce waves / puckering - Use only distilled water unless otherwise noted in the steamer’s instructions Par2Pro uses the Conair GS23RC Extreme Steam Fabric Steamer with Dual Heat; however, we cannot guarantee your results will be the same as ours.

    ---
Usage - Use proper golfing methods - Always use clean clubs and balls - Do not use Pro V1 golf balls as we have found these to reduce the screen life significantly - Ensure all balls do not have ANY damage (cracks, nicks, etc.) or markings - Check screen regularly for wear.

    ---
Regular Cleaning - Remove any attachments (ie: netting) if possible - Warm water wash - No bleach or detergents - Wash dark colors separately - Tumble dry synthetic setting Stains - Results may vary according to the stain - Use mild dishwasher soap - Test in an inconspicuous location

I watched a YouTube video of a random guy using an iron, on a different type of screen material, and it was enough for me to not to attempt it.

My screen looks good enough for now until I finish the rest of this labor of love nightmare. It's only really noticeable without the projector on; although they are sort of large creases. I will probably start with a steamer and be super careful with a hair-dryer while it's wet. I may try to crank up the heat in my "Golfzebo" to 100deg with a turbo heater when I get there.

Some people have laid them out in the sun and put them in the dryer apparently...?!? <<<Not enough sun here, don't want to end up with a 5'x5', so I'm not trying that either.

Hopefully somebody else chimes in soon.

Bit of an old thread I realize but any ideas as to why the "No Prov V1s"? It is not clear to me why these golf balls (what I use on course) would differ significantly wrt screen wear then any others......

Because spin is believed to be a major contributor to screen wear. These balls spin more than others on wedge shots. If the cover becomes scuffed and then you have a high spinning ball, that rough surface will wear the screen out faster.
