  • Crisp and clear picture, cloth over impact screen.

Just thought I would share my experience with something I tried. When building my enclosure I went with a 10x9 size. Ordered a 10x10 impact screen from Supertex. It's very rigid and durable, but also has a slight waffle pattern to it. So I added a polyester photo drop screen in front of the impact, I know most people do this with a black cloth and white cloth behind it, I tried the front on a whim

It's been over 4 months since I've had it this way and I couldn't be happier. I get a nice clean picture from the projector and there isn't a single mark or year after about 750 shots.

William, how did you attach the drop cloth to the existing screen? Looks like a good alternative to replacing the entire screen.

I just use the tarp clips that most use here on the site, and if needed ball bungee cords. Since it's the same size as the impact screen it works perfectly.

This makes it easy to replace if needed. And at about $20 to get a new one, much cheaper than getting a new impact screen

I believe this is how foresight does it with their sim in a box. Mine had an impact net with velcro on top and sides. The screen attaches to the impact net via that velcro. the bottom of the impact net has an elastic cord that keeps it taught.

It looks like archery screen but not 100% certain. The screen itself is just very thick piece of white material. The system together works great

William Jenkins - I'm wondering about your 10x10 impact screen behind the drop cloth? Do you have a link for that? I'm hoping to find an Archery netting with grommets sewn in... having a hard time locating one.

Thanks William Jenkins - that's the most incredible I've seen for an impact screen replacement! Can you post links to the tarp clips and ball bungee cords you use?

I've been leaning to using archery netting for my impact screen, as it has reduced cost, but also makes no 'thump' sound on impact... what kind of sound are you getting into this photo drop screen, and how close is it mounted to your actual impact screen, or is it clipped directly to your impact screen (pictures please)?

It's attached direct to the screen with the tarps clips on 3 sides. It still makes a thump noise when you hit it. I will say it does cut down on the noise some, and some on the bounce back.

      I will take photos tomorrow.

Thanks for the links William Jenkins , so your original impact screen (from Supertex) also had a thump when originally put up, but now it is reduced? How much bounce back are you getting and how tightly is that mounted to your frame? Look forward to the pictures showing details.

From everything I hear on YouTube, archery screen makes ZERO noise when the ball hits it, it's basically like a very thick netting, and all you hear is the club/ball impact - which is what I want, you do not hear any sound when the ball impacts the archery netting (impact screen). After playing in several local sims, and my wife stopping by one, she could not believe how loud the whole environment was. I've also come to realize how loud that double Crack/Thump is, but that goes away with archery screen. I'm just hoping if I mount one of these photo backdrops in front of the archery screen, or maybe even behind it, I can get a slightly better picture, and still not have the 'thump' when the ball hits it. If you could take a very short video I would appreciate that as it would let me hear how it sounds with the impact to that photo backdrop...

      Thanks again,
      -Brett

Brettster, did you ever find the best way to minimize the thump sound? Did you try putting the photodrop behind the archery net at all?

William Jenkins not sure if you saw my questions on 8/6 (commented at 1:05pm)? Just wondering about a few additional things? Also, have you taken any photos, you could post on this thread showing your setup with your photo drop-cloth?

The guy I bought my protee from was using a photo drop cloth and raves about it. It had a light gray circle of marks, that's it. He had a blanket and moving blanket behind it. Research led me here and I went in on it.

the people at cimmaron felt I should get one of their screens. Apparently they are fairly reasonable and durable, but I went ahead and got their baffle netting. 10 x 12 of it. And a 10 x 12 drop cloth, exact same William posted. Thanks for that. And got the tarp clips he posted, thanks for that too!

My plan is to hang from 1in pipe. I got these brackets with a hole in the middle and you screw them in and the bar slides into it and the bracket squeezes the bar with a nut.

Then I will cut a 2 foot or so section to add to a 10 foot piece, and will connect with emt 1 in compression fitting. Am going to use zip ties like curtain rings so I can open and close for parking. On sides is amazon blackout curtains. Will velcro to eachother and screen. I bought made for fabric velcro for this purpose. I don't know wth I am doing, but hope it works! My plan was to get a quality archery net and put the screen in front. He said the net only gives 4 in or so.

Applescrap - sounds great, is that Cimmaron Baffle Netting you got an Archery Screen? How much was that piece, I've found the prices to be quite high, and have problems finding Archery screen at good prices? I also want to use Archery Screen (netting) like you have, so likely I will try that drop cloth behind as you say, is that white, to help the screen show up better? Please post a link to the William post you mention, and to the tarp clips and drop cloth, if you can.

I'm looking forward to get my screen moving soon - and if you have pics showing how it all turned out, would love to see those too?

Yes, it was only like 90 for a 10 x 12. They are trying to talk me into their imact screen now. Its 325 plus shipping and they claim no nothing needed besides it and that it is durable. I dont know what to do. I like the archery net and back drop but a screen is nice too. Unless it is mesh like.

Is their 10x12 (for $90) like archery webbing? Can you please post a link? All of those I've looked at are much more expensive - in the $300-$400/range, and from the sound of what you say, not much different. I just want to have 'webbing' for cheap, because it reduces the sound to nothing. There are videos up on YouTube showing that there is no sound at all when the ball hits the Archery webbing.

The post is up above on this thread. The links are up there to. I dont know how to link that post to this but scroll up and you should see it.

no, its screen in front! White! Just like the first post from william. I am refering to his plan exactly.

Thanks - yeah, I remember that now, though he never did post pics of his setup, until I see he did tonight! Going to dig deeper into this, as the price is amazing, and if the durability is there, it's a huge win.

I would be curious to know if this will extend the life of the impact screen? These things are cheap and I would definitely put one in front of my impact screen if I knew it helped. Has anyone here been doing something like this for a long time?

I hate to sound skeptical, but this is pretty amazing considering what I have experienced so far. I have a Carl's Golf Premium screen with moving blankets behind it. Since I hit from pretty close to the screen, most of my shots hit the same general area. The moving blankets have holes blown in them that look like they're from a shotgun blast. So this photography backdrop is tough enough to take the impact from a golf ball and not deform or tear?

If that's the case, I'm buying one today. I can already see a little damage to my impact screen after only about 4 months. Nothing serious, just some pilling of the material in the center of the impact zone. Like the others said, this sounds like a really cheap way to extend the life of an impact screen. Its hard to believe this stuff can stand up to a golf ball.

Actually, for the current price of $30 for the 10 x 10, its a no-brainer.

tntfox, thanks for your response. Yeah I just put my mat down today and tried a photodrop in front of my archery netting. And it is really loud. I might keep it is way for a bit but then try moving the photodrop behind my archery netting. With how loud it is currently I do not mind sacrificing some picture quality for reduced sound.

tntfox I tried it with both the photodrop in front of and then behind my archery netting. Both options are pretty loud. Where if I just got into my archery netting, it is completely silent but the picture quality is terrible. I value silence over picture quality however with just the archery netting the picture is very bad. Any suggestions on anything else you have tried? I'm hesitant to buy an actual impact screen because I am not convinced they will be any quieter.

Mernst33, I have an impact screen from Carl's and it really is quiet. It wasn't, though, until I put a mesh tarp behind it. The more I hit the same spot and stretched the impact fabric, the louder it got. I also noticed some tearing of the first layer of impact material that happened before I put up my backing material. I guess maybe the thickness of the impact fabric is what helps muffle the sound where the photo backdrop is much thinner (but the picture on it is awesome). Like you, I have to favor sound over picture.

I'd like to try something like this, but would like to find a 12Wx10H version. Has anyone come across a version with the 12' width?

The first post in the thread m looks like it has a 10x12 option for $32. I'm ordering mine tonight. Unfortunately, I live in Dallas and we are snowed in this week.

12x10 would fit over the hitting net properly.

I use the photo drop cloth as my primary impact and my real impact is behind it. So much clearer and more crisp. Absolutely no holes, tears, marks, or discoloration. I will try to take photo tonight. When I first build my enclosure and only used the impact screen and moving blankets I was getting staining in the first few days. I've had the photo backdrop up since May and is still in great condition. I hit into it about 3-4 times a week about 100 balls at a time.

Have you been able to get the waves out and get it nice and smooth like an impact screen? It looks like from the photos that there's some wrinkles in it.
