  • Crisp and clear picture, cloth over impact screen.

Just thought I would share my experience with something I tried. When building my enclosure I went with a 10x9 size. Ordered a 10x10 impact screen from Supertex. It's very rigid and durable, but also has a slight waffle pattern to it. So I added a polyester photo drop screen in front of the impact, I know most people do this with a black cloth and white cloth behind it, I tried the front on a whim

It's been over 4 months since I've had it this way and I couldn't be happier. I get a nice clean picture from the projector and there isn't a single mark or year after about 750 shots.

A sim center owner (using dazian for 10 years) told me they use the following screen with success :

It s equivalent to the premium screen from carls (3 layers), 4 times cheaper
i ve sent Dazian a mail with no answer.

by any chance do you (or some others who have bought from them) have an individual contact act Dazian ?

    thanks

      Hi all

i m now in touch with the customer service of dazian.
I now understand that the gain of a screen tells a lot about the quality of the image to be projected on it.
I m looking at the dazian screen dedicated to golf application : the spacer screen. The gain is 0.72
The heavy weight trapeze screen that some of you have ordered is 0.73.
      https://www.dazian.com/wp-content/up...al-Data_V1.pdf

I have contacted carls place (very good customer service by the way). The premium screen has a gain of 1.0 ! It means that if your projector is 5000lm, the screen will reflects back 5000lm : bright image.
The SQ screen from par2pro is also 1.0 from what I read in other posts of this forum.

The dazian screens will reflect back around 3600lm - less bright than the premium screen from carls

The technical specs explain the difference of price.
The spacer screen is 250usd for 4 yards x 122”.
The equivalent from carls is 800usd.

is a brighter image by 30% worth an additional 550usd ?

        Hi Patator100

Thanks for tracking all that down... but, I feel you've left one part out. This thread started with William Jenkins and he is using a Photo Backdrop that is pure white, and costs much less than $250 USD, in fact cost me about $34.99 for 10'x12', here it is: https://tinyurl.com/photobackdrop10x12

So, the real questions to be answered are 1.) what is the 'gain' of the Photo Backdrop? and then, the question would be, is a slightly duller image (the difference between the Dazian/Photo Backdrop vs. Carls or Par2Pro) worth the additional dollars? An even bigger question is what the actual life from the Premium screens, compared to what it is for the Dazian, and is it really worth it, when you can place the Photo Backdrop in front of it and prolong the life by ?? (how long)? Maybe it lasts 20-30 years and then it's only being replaced with a $35 backdrop. You also may be suggesting the Dazian may be worth it for the lower price - if you do not want to use anything else in front of it? And what is the life of the Dazian with a PhotoBackdrop in front of it? And without anything in front of it?

All valid questions that most of us will have to wait 10-15 years probably to get an answer! So, it seems, at this point, either option is valid...

Good point. I missed the original spirit of this spot. The photo backdrop solution….that has deviated towards the dazian screen.

I ve been using the photo backdrop front of my pr-20 screen for nearly 6 months now thanks to this thread. No hole, no issue at all.
After reading the last post about the dazian screen, I was hopping to have a better quality image with the spacer dazian product…but I m not sure at all that it will make a better job than my photo backdrop after finding out the gain value of both dazian screens.
I guess that the photo backdrop has a gain value about 1.0
I will try to find out.

I bought this thing and it ripped in about 8 rounds played this week. I had a net and 2 screens behind it as well. It was also loud as all heck compared to my screens. Waste of $30 IMO but glad it works for others. I'll leave it up to protect my screen as long as it lasts but I won't be buying another one

Has there been a correlation between ball speed and issues with damaging the photo backdrop?

Maybe. My driver is 140mph ball speed…

Here is what it looks like after about 8 rounds. I use the dots on the balls for my uneekor, that's what all the marks are around the tear.

What is your ball speed Jwheels9876 - are those dots stickers, or holes? Painted on, or stuck on, or drilled in? What do those ball marks do to your normal screen (and which screen do you have)? Just trying to put together an operating guide to installing a Photo Backdrop, and if it works, is loud, or tears based on swing speed and screen behind.

                    Thanks,
                    -Brett

I can get it in the mid 160's off the driver and my wedges are usually pretty high spin.
I have the par 2 pro SQ screen
the dots are stickers that i buy and put on the balls myself. It's getting a little old doing that to be honest and I'm hoping the new GC3 gets 3rd party software with tgc and creative golf. If it does I am switching over to it

Honestly I bought this screen hoping it would just last me this winter and protect my SQ screen for another indoor season but it's not the answer for me.

                      • Well guys, I went through the process of pounding grommets into my photo backdrop so I could stretch it tight across frame, in front of the impact screen. It looked awesome, especially after I hit it with a steamer. The problem was that the volume increase when a ball hit the screen was just too much. It went from a "thud" with just the impact screen to a "crack" with the photo backdrop. I thought that if I added some tension to the photo backdrop and got it closer to the impact screen that it would quiet down a little, but that wasn't the case. So, I removed it and I'm back to my impact screen with a mesh tarp behind.

I wish this would have worked because my impact screen deteriorated in a big way. The first layer of fabric started to tear in the impact spot and that continually got bigger and bigger. I would have little pieces of the top layer flaking off the screen while hitting. The strength of the material seems to be intact, but it just looks bad. To try to remedy this, I flipped the impact screen over and was disappointed to find that the Harbor Freight Moving Blankets I was using behind the screen actually bled into the impact screen. So now, I have a smooth surface, but there is a bluish stain about the size of one moving blanket on the face of the impact screen.

I have hit thousands of balls over the last 18 months so I feel I have gotten my money out of the screen, but I will buy a different brand for the next one. In case you were wondering, I got my impact screen (premium material) at DW Quail but it was the exact same picture used on the Carl's Golfland website. I don't know if they are the same and DW Quail doesn't sell these on their website any longer and they have not responded to my request for information. Small price to pay for the luxury of having a sim.

                        • tntfox - I'm really curious about something, you say this:

to find that the Harbor Freight Moving Blankets I was using behind the screen actually bled into the impact screen. So now, I have a smooth surface, but there is a bluish stain about the size of one moving blanket on the face of the impact screen.
I was afraid of something like that happening. I have an HD moving (called 'sound blocking') blanket that I plan to hang behind my 3-layer 801 screen. Can you tell me how close you hung the 'moving blankets' to the impact screen that they were able to bleed into the impact screen? Also, did you wash them before hanging?

I wonder then, about this, maybe I should just hang my photo backdrop BEHIND my Impact screen then hang the HD moving/sound blocking blanket behind the photo backdrop, just in case my moving blanket bleeds like that, it will then bleed into the photo backdrop and not into my impact screen? I could then order another $35 photo backdrop screen to hang in-front of my impact screen?

Also, I wonder what the DW Quail screen you have is like, can you take a pic and measure it's thickness? Is it 1 layer, 2 layers, or more like 3 layers? I have an 801 to hang which is 3 layers and supposed to be one of the best for stopping the ball and resisting damage (though not as quiet as a single layer, or an archery net). I'm kind of wondering now if I should also pickup an Archery net, as a 'backup' to hang behind all of these other screens to give less bounce - and maybe reduce sound?

I will try to record sound testing when I do all of this, so we can know for sure... at least how a 3-layer 801 screen performs with a photo backdrop.

Thank you tntfox for the input...
                          -Brett

Brettster, I do not suspect that my ball speed would be considered high. I hit lots more iron shots than drivers in my sim and my 7 iron club head speed, for example, is in the mid 80's. I think I got a bad screen. When I go to the PGA Superstore, their screen looks and feels exactly like mine and theirs has no visible tearing or deterioration.

As for the blankets, they were not especially heavy and they started to deteriorate within a week of hanging them. I have seen other reports of guys blowing holes in memory foam mattresses placed directly behind the impact screen, so I am not too surprised about the moving blankets. I wish I would have taken a picture of the one with a hole in it as it was about the size of a volley ball. I ended up throwing them away and just went with the windscreen-type backer. The noise is no worse than with the blankets and the mesh is not coming apart. I also tightened up the impact screen a little by extending the length of the horizontal frame rails and the impact area does not seem to dimple as much and the rebound didn't increase dramatically.

I do think it is important to have something behind the impact screen as I didn't for the first couple of weeks and a pretty good sized dimple formed in the screen. I thought that might have been the issue with the screen tearing, but it got continually worse even after adding blankets, the mesh, and a plastic tarp.

How close behind the impact screen? I agree, something behind there will be beneficial - I'm trying to find something that will give me a good balance between sound deadening and bounce back & ricochet stopping & image enhancement. Recently I heard about this idea of buying a Black Velvet Blackout Curtain to hang behind to bring out the whiteness of the screen, but also slow down bounce back - this guy had zip-tied 4 layers together: 1.) impact screen, 2.) curtain, 3.) heavy duty blanket, 4.) archery netting and he claims he has almost zero bounce, zero noise (the wall is against his daughter's nursery) and enhanced whiteness of the screen.

                            @Brettster

I have found that if you have your material directly behind, like touching, the impact screen, it will serve multiple purposes:

                            - Minimizes dimpling in the impact screen (I think this is the most important in my setup)
                            - May minimize bounce back if your impact screen is not too tight
                            - Seems to deaden the sound of the impact on the screen, but the club is the loudest

I originally had moving blankets, then the windscreen, then a heavy plastic tarp. I found that the windscreen is providing the same results as all the other stuff combined, so I am sticking with that. I did look at the windscreen last night and it does definitely show the effects of the ball hitting the impact screen in roughly the same place all the time.

If I could find archery netting for a decent price, I would probably try the photo backdrop again in front of that.

Sorry if the link to your account didn't work. I can't seem to get that feature to work in a comment.

                          hi
i m about doing the reverse of you to get a better image quality. Removing my photo backdrop and replacing it with a 501 or 801 to improve quality of image.

you say you have a 801 and wants to add a photo backdrop.
i have a pr-20 archery screen and photo backdrop front of it. No issue with noise.

are you not satisfied with the image quality of your 801 or you just want to protect it putting a photo back drop front of it ?

                          thanks

                          • Patator100 - I want to protect it - figured for $35 it's a pretty good insurance policy I've not compared image quality yet... still finishing my build. I'll take some pics as I get there... Dang weather has been too cold and my heating is not working enough yet. Warming up this week and I'm adding the remainder of insulation and walls.
